2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI have been a registered, active member of
the Democratic Party since 1966. When I was 15 years old, I was a volunteer for JFK in California. I am not a "New" Democrat.
Bernie Sanders became a Democrat in 2015. He is a new Democrat.
Labels are nonsense. They serve no purpose, other than to divide people. Please don't do that. We need to come together, not split apart.
Thanks.

(146,325 posts)I'm a Democrat. Bernie is a Democrat. When we joined the party is irrelevant. We are Democrats. We are part of the same party.

(146,325 posts)I accept their word on the matter. We're all Democrats, if we vote for Democratic candidates. If we do not, then perhaps not.

(3,335 posts)Bernie was the one who made a conscious decision to remain an Independent and never let us forget that. Had he been able to advance on committees without making a conscious decision to caucus with one party or another, he would be nowhere in the Senate today. Therefore it was in his interest to caucus with one of the parties and he chose to caucus with the Democratic Party. He doesn't get brownie points for simply serving his own interests.

It beggars belief how twisted peoples views have become this primary.

(146,325 posts)That is all it means, which is precisely my point. It is an adjective relating to time, and that only. My post was factual and precise.

(34,661 posts)Became a Democrat in 1959,part of the Original Humphrey for President Club in 1960. Later joined up with the JFK folks after we lost out in the in the Primaries.
So tired of the Labels,we are all Democrats and now it is time to get this Election done in our favor. This idea of not voting for the Party Nominee is pure BULLCRAP.
And Bernie Sanders will be out there Campaigning for all of our Candidates.

(325 posts)Is that third way centrism etc. did, and does exist. Bill Clinton called himself a New Democrat. Object to the term if you wish, but there is a tug of war going on between centrists and the more progressive wing. The rift continues and the fight ranges on because the progressive do not feel like their objections have been sufficiently heard or understood.

(20,453 posts)... is highlighted by you telling us what a real Democrat IS.
The allegiance to the status quo here is nauseating in the name of WHO is WHAT? The most real example of a Democrat was FDR and his understanding of bringing the economy back to the point where investing it in the American worker was key to its success. The second Bill of Rights was going to be his crowned jewel on his legacy, but he died too soon to complete it. Bernie Sanders is the only Democrat (Democratic Socialist, to be exact) who offered us hope of that legacy.
What's the good of informing us not only who you are, but who Bernie Sanders is not, when the next sentence contained, "We need to come together, not split apart".
That's about as insincere as it gets.

So you can stop ringing that cockamamie bell. There is no party registration in Vermont, either. Or in many states.
But you already knew that. So ones only conclusion is that you are just trying to stir the pot. And cause trouble.
My state, Michigan, has not had partisan registration for years, like many other states. Including Minnesota!
So, there is no way to be a registered Democrat in Michigan, Vermont, or many other states. Including Minnesota!
So stop making shit up, MineralMan. There's no practical way to have a closed presidential primary in these states.
Love ya, but you are beginning to piss me off with this crap.
You are wrong. Just wrong.
And, BTW, if I were wanting to be an utter jerk I would remind you that you are likely not registered Democratic Party either, as in Minnesota it's technically called the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party.
Stop this shit, my good friend. Just stop.
My best to you.

(1,957 posts)It might be a nice exercise to sit down and look at a list of the principles of JFK or FDR or any of those democrats from your youth and then compare it to a list of the positions of the current contenders.
Not just for the presidency but also for the legislative positions.
I think you would get a very big surprise.
Very big.
You looked at the label and drew a conclusion from the label, not the thing under it.
