Until the Obama campaign says something, please stop with the vote rigging, supression, etc theories

I'll trust what they're doing on this front vs twitter rumors and whatever else our sensitive side wants to put out there to stoke the fear and loathing machine.

If you believe in the stats and the nerds, this shit won't even matter. Stop sounding alarms when none exist. A lot of this same shit happened in 2008 and happens every year. This is crying about the referees. Worry about the game which Obama won handily.

Sure, I'm sure a few thousand people will turn away from long lines and be impatient. Some of those will be Republicans too.

Sure, I'm sure someone didn't know the ID laws and may have assumed he couldn't vote because of it. Some of those will be Republicans too.

Sure, I'm sure some guy who decided to vote in the hood in Philly got scared shitless when he saw the Black Panther waiting outside. Oh well. He's probably not going for Obama anyway.

Sure, I'm sure there will be some fuckup with the machines or scanners or receipts or whatever.

Here's the point. IT SHOULD NOT MATTER. This election SHOULD NOT BE CLOSE ENOUGH FOR ANY OF THAT TO COME INTO PLAY AT ALL. If Obama's team thought so, don't you think they'd be firing pre-emptive strikes all week? Readying the ground for the day after to contest shit left and right?

I know I know. "They stole 2000 and 2004!!!!!" Folks, that's 9/11 Truther shit and even if true, the fact that the races were close enough for that shit to matter meant we already lost. Think about it, we lost to Bush TWICE. TWICE. TWICE!!!!

I'll trust this campaign over anything Bob Shrum and Donna Brazile ran all fucking week and 10 TIMES on Sunday.

Stop the conspiracy theories. It's what Republicans will be doing tonight. Don't join them.

That is all...
Man up and focus on the results as they come in.

I think the Obama Campaign can handle itself.

Also, I wonder if the "OMG I ONLY GET # MINUTES TO VOTE ALERT ERIC HOLDER!!!1!" drama makes it harder for real issues

to get handled.

As I scrolled down this thread, I noticed alot of low count posters are being bullied. Ok, I guess I am supposed to instantly

have 10,000 posts to be accepted. It sorta off putting, but I am sure us trolls are gonna end up eating pizza by 10 pm anyway.

If fraud intimidation and election stealing is so horrifying, why are any of us sitting here on our puters?

Why aren't we all VOLUNTEERING at polling stations instead of manning the keyboard? Why aren't all the DUers who are sure

Romney is in the process of stealing this election as we type at their local polling stations preventing the theft?

If I thought Obama and his campaign- who were utterly flawless in 2008 btw- did not have this handled, I'd be drooling in fear.

When Kerry lost, they went from inquiring when the champagne was to be popped open to Oh God Why in a few hours.

But my take is for everyone to stop freaking out over all these stories of voter suppression, id laws, lack of ballots, wait times, etc..

BECAUSE

Obama campaign should not be letting this happen at all.

Seriously people, Obama has the largest ground game ever assembled, has lots of money, millions of volunteers, thousands of lawyers, etc

SO

Obama campaign should have been ahead of all of this, they should have made sure that there were plenty of voting machines in precincts through their lawyers, they should have made sure that every precinct had enough ballots, etc.

Obama has the capability to ensure all of this even though the repug governors have tried every trick in the book, YET Obama has the massive campaign to counter this.

WHY haven't they?

The bottom line is this - President Obama and his staff of intelligent and capable staff have got this. Why do you think they have all the lawyers lined up in Ohio? I wouldn't be surprised if the secret service isn't involved and I can promise you that if Ohio suddenly flips for Romney, those experimental panels Husted had installed will be taken into evidence.

48. Are we supposed to be good little Democrats and sit back and take it?
Tue Nov 6, 2012, 03:01 PM
Nov 2012

Heck no!

The Republicans are bullies. If you let your guard down they will take advantage of it.

And it has to do with the math as well. There are more registered Democrats in the US than Republicans, from what I've heard.

Voter suppression is one means to decrease those numbers.

And it's already happening. It's been happening with all the Republican governor nonsense restricting early voter nonsense. It's taken court orders to stop it.

So why should we step back and take it?

way over the top.

First, I do think that this is an issue. We need to report these to the appropriate people when we see this.

Second, and this is also important, the freakout/handwringing needs to stop. Be logical, report it, and trust that OFA and the mountain of lawyers they have will not just say, "oh well, Romney stole the election, moving on to 2016..."

That's why you report it, to give them ammo, but stay calm, cause they are in control. What we don't want to do is create mass panic where people are reporting things that are rumors/etc. that they don't actually see and may not be true. This will simply create a huge mess for OFA if they need to do something about it. Calm and vigilante is the way to go. Some of the original language was a bit strong in the original post was strong, but the overarching theme of not freaking out because OFA is in control of the situation does have merit.

and neither did OFA. What exactly is our freaking out going to do? I will freak out when they do. Again, report it, but don't lose your minds. Do you really think that OFA lawyers and poll watchers are going to sit there and watch this happen? If they start causing a stink, that's when I will worry. I am not saying, "don't worry, the lawyers will save the day." I am saying, stay calm, be vigilante, and understand that OFA wants to win too and won't sit by and let them blatantly steal the election. Yes, absolutely report each instance, but the freakout/mass panic stuff doesn't help anyone.

The stolen election screeching is so out of place here.

There are always anomalies in anything as large and complex as a national election. Conspiracy theorists point their fingers at the anomalies and that's all they need. That's called confirmation bias. They look for confirming evidence and ignore all the disconfirming evidence.

Yes, the Republicans are doing their usual dirty tricks. But the OP is correct. If DUers are aware of them, the Obama campaign is also. Or, do people really think the conspiracy extends to OFA?

Settle down everybody. Vote!! Drive others to the polls. Do what you can to help things go smoothly.

And if you witness an anomaly, do what the dozens of posts here recommend. Report it to OFA, or your local Democratic party office.

There will be observers all throughout the process today and tonight and until the election is decided.

Our system works. Working within it works, too.

But it strains credulity that this isn't just another case of what goes on in every election since time began.

There are always going to be these things as long as we do elections the way we do. That doesn't make it a grand conspiracy to steal an election.

Four years ago DU was alight with this stolen election silliness. What happened? Obama was elected and it wasn't close.

If you are so darn fired up about stolen elections, what are you doing posting on DU when you could be helping?

I've been doing my part. And I am now going to get ready to go to friends' house for dinner and election watch.

Keep the faith, my friend. We've got this one. No one's going to steal anything.

Guys guys guys guys(and gals)

1) Stop using the post count arguments. It's lame. I mean really. I know you guys let the trolls get to you, but I don't know a single fucking troll on any site I've ever been a part of that has over 500 posts and posts shit like this just to act like a Democrat to curry favor:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251215815

http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251193795

http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251181664

I'm not to rock pom poms every single post and tell you what you want to hear. This forum is supposed to encourage debate and even difference of opinions at times, all in the spirit of the same cause which is advancing liberalism and progressives. The fact that any opinion which goes against consensus but still within the TOS gets attacked is real sad.

2) Let me see if I get this shit correct. We have a Black President of the United States called Barack Hussein Obama. We also have a Black Attorney General who heads the Justice Department. Both would lose their jobs, and in Holder's case, possibly be convicted of a crime, if they lost. Yet somehow, neither of these two are sounding any alarms whatsoever about voter suppression, vote switching, vote stealing, etc . But all the ANECDOTAL evidence on this board means Obama is going to lose and we should be taking to the streets? I mean this seriously passes your sniff test, BEFORE you even get to the actual acts of "voter suppression" themselves? If the man himself is PLAYING BASKETBALL and chilling at home the day of the election that's about to be stolen from him, why the fuck are you concerned?

3) Do any of you understand what it would take to perform voter suppression at the scale necessary to change a NATIONAL PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION?

4) To the black folk in here who have commented. I grew up in the hood, I know the fear based on past history, slavery, Jim Crow, 3/5ths all of that. I can appreciate the fear that this election could be stolen. Growing up in NYC, I think everything is a setup which is the only reason I have any apprehension about tonight( I fear polls may be biased all in one direction). I also know that all the "it's the man holding me down" shit is even more destructive and "vote suppressing" than anything the Right wants to pull. I also know focusing more on "voter suppression" vs the apathy that exists about national affairs in the community is what "the man" wants. Feed into that if you wish.

5) Seriously, some of the conspiracies posted here are just absurd. Vote switching machines. Kidnappings. Disappearing votes. Yet all anecdotal with no hard evidence presented other than a tweet, maybe a blog post, or a news clipping about 1-2 people who were affected. By the way, the right is talking up the same shit. These are usually signs of a side that knows they're about to lose. Wanna be lumped in with them? What happened to all the confidence that comes from having the stats and nerds on our side?

6) My larger point stands. NONE OF THIS WILL MATTER IF OBAMA DID WHAT HE NEEDED TO AND WINS BY A LARGE ENOUGH MARGIN. If this is even close enough where this shit comes into play, HE CREATED HIS OWN BAD KARMA for not being able to demolish the most dishonest, non charismatic, cynical and craven Republican candidate ever nominated. I'm sorry folks, I don't like when my teams barely beat inferior teams by the skin of their teeth or even keep them in the game. This is what happened in 2000 and 2004. We snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by running inept campaigns and terrible candidates who made piss poor political decisions. That did not happen this year. Have faith in your candidate. He's only proven to be the best political performer of our lifetime.

Thanks...

Tue Nov 6, 2012, 09:40 PM
Nov 2012

I'm pretty sure of that.

HOWEVER, every year, in every election that votes are siphoned away from us adds to the perception that some looney bin republican is close or ahead in some states or counties. A few thousand votes one year, a few thousand the next and the next thing you know it's 2012 and a blue state is being called a supposed battleground. Give it a few more years and it will be called a red state.

So rather than ceasing "with the vote rigging, supression, etc theories," we should be challenging every hint of these occurrences EVEN WHEN WE WIN. In the meantime, stay the course people. Stay in those lines and fight to be counted.

I cannot recall coming across a more irresponsible OP than this one. It pulled me out of my contentful lurking, of which I will now resume.

As you were.

To be honest, I think I can focus on both the returns and the verified election tampering (e.g, Clackamas County, WA-- which wasn't a "fuckup" as you so eloquently wrote, but actual vote tampering-- quite the difference, yes?), in addition to a few other concerns as well.

There are many of us who are able to concern themselves with more than simply one docket on the agenda at the same time... you may want to give it a try sometime.

However, if you believe that vote tampering is a process which should not matter, then indeed-- believe that, live that and enjoy it. (Or, you could simply "man up" and realize "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy..."
