2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWI. Does this incident count as "voter intimidation"? And how to report if yes?
I voted early, BUT my neighbor just called me with an incident at our polling station deep in " Walkersha" county. She is on the road the rest of the day, so I told her I would do some homework on if and where she should report the incident.
It is this. When she went to post her ballot ( for Obama and Baldwin) into the machine with the top side up as you need to do, a poll worker was stationed right on top of it, seeing how she voted before he gave her the "I voted" sticker. He could see how she had marked her ballot in that we use the type where you draw in the lines with a marker.
She and I both know this person to be a fundie winger.
No, she was not prevented in casting her ballot, but she "felt" intimidated by his location and the fact that this ward has such a terrible reputation for " discovering" ballots that just happen to change election results in favor of Repugs. The Prosser recall was the most egregious.
Is this worthy of a complaint, and if so, to whom? Thanks in advance.

(6,622 posts)and ask that they make sure ballot folders are made available. And have they told people to put the ballots in face-up? Why?

(16,399 posts)In RI, you can feed it into the machine either way, because there are often two sides.

(5,075 posts)In another election they told me the machine counts the ballot regardless of which side is up or down or front or back.

(6,262 posts)Good to check out for our ward for future reference. I remember once having to put it in again, because I had put it in wrong and it spit it out. But could have been long enough ago that the machines are different now.

(6,622 posts)I'd put the ballots in every which way, to make sure the machine didn't care about the direction. Head first, tail first, face up, face down.

(6,262 posts)The poll worker was indeed too close to the machine per training, and the ward will be called today.
Thanks to all for advice.

(6,262 posts)Because she was not prevented from voting, it is a question of poll worker training to avoid any anxious feelings.

(919 posts)IMO, there's nothing that can be done, as she was allowed to vote. I think we're all anxious, and we KNOW that the Republicans are having a field day trying to rig the system, but it's all speculation to the authorities. I mean, even the idiot in Virginia who threw out 8 Democrat early-voting ballots wasn't even reprimanded!

(784 posts)If she felt that he was deliberately looking down at her ballot, at her choices, to see what she chose, and that this wasn't just him standing over the machine, watching, or working, etc., then she could have something to complain about.
The truth is that, as poll workers, you will help people vote, sometimes elderly or sick individuals who literally need you to move their hands and help them make their selections, etc., sometimes you will see how people vote, it just happens, its in eyesight, your working, etc. It's a bit of a fine line, you shouldn't be looking, obviously, but she should hopefully be able to tell how she felt was he acting. If she thinks there was a problem she should call the County Clerk- SHE should do it, not you. No one wants to hear from a friend of a friend, you get the people directly involved in it to step up.

(6,262 posts)Just helping her out with some homework. She will call,if she feels necessary.
She was "spooked", and knowing the guy myself, so would I have been. But I am the type of personality to give him a "back off" look at the time of ballot machine interaction and wait until he stepped away.
He and his wife are gladhanding creepy and very active Teabaggers, with their very own "newsletter" combining religion and politics. Also make money with propaganda DVRs along the same lines.
Again, thanks all for the input and info.

(6,622 posts)was to ensure that every voter could vote privately without assistance. Of course, that's not the reality, but it was the intent.
