By Alexander Bolton - 06/29/16 01:19 PM EDT
Bernie Sanders wants to chair the Health Committee next year if Democrats take over the Senate.
Theres one problem. Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), a strong ally of Hillary Clinton, may not give up the position.
Murray says she loves the Health panel and the alternative, taking over the Appropriations Committee, is not as enticing as it used to be given today's fierce battles over spending and the abolishment of earmarks.
Murray is signaling to colleagues that shes very happy in her current role and would relish the chance to work with Clinton on major issues.
She loves the work she is doing on the Health Committee to fight for policies that help women, students, families, seniors, workers and the economy and there is a whole lot more that shed like to get done, said her spokesman, Eli Zupnick.
Murray told The Hill Tuesday that she has not had a specific conversation with Clintons inner circle about how they might work together next year if Democrats control both the White House and Senate, as they hope.
But Democratic lawmakers on the panel say Murray talks as though she expects to return as its Democratic leader in the next Congress.

(15,429 posts)Apparently there is one Senator who refuses to give, even though it's over, so it looks like what he wants will be taken away.

(53,788 posts)Why should she give up her seat? What committees were Sanders on before? They don't want him back?

(58,785 posts)will be "losing," and right now they're all positioning themselves for what they want. Murray is next in line and eager to work with Hillary on these issues, so she will get the position unless she accepts an offer of something even more desirable.
Personally, I would like Sanders to be satisfied, but putting any Democrat in any Senate leadership position where he would work in opposition to the Democrat in the Oval Office seems like a really bad idea. In all likelihood he would be better on any of the committees, as leader or otherwise, where his positions would be basically in line with hers.

(2,897 posts)She's earned it. I doubt Bernie's post-primary tour makes anyone in the potential Clinton White House or the Senate Dem leadership jump for joy at the thought of working with him to get passable legislation through. There's still time, but Dems are going to have enough of a fight from the republicans on their hand. I doubt anyone wants a Chairman going rogue.

(2,550 posts)I'd rather get rid of earmarks and be somewhat transparent than have my tax dollars wasted on useless things.
Congress needs to learn to compromise, which means the GOP needs to come to the middle. There's a lot of middle dems, not so much Rs. We don't need to bribe them to vote for common sense legislation.

(701 posts)She is a quiet go-along when we need real change. Not crazy about either of our senators but prefer Cantwell who stood up with Feingold and tries to monitor financial interests. More than Murray does.
