Democrats' Platform Pushes Hillary Clinton Toward Single Payer Healthcare

The latest draft of the Democratic Partys platform pushes presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton toward rival Bernie Sanders idea that the government rather than insurance companies will play a larger role in providing healthcare benefits.
We believe as Democrats that health care is a right, not a privilege, and our health care system should put people before profits, the draft, released Friday, said. Thanks to the hard work of President Obama and Democrats in Congress we took a critically important step towards the goal of universal health care by passing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which has offered coverage to 20 million more Americans and ensured millions more will never be denied coverage on account of a pre-existing condition.
Democrats will never falter in our generations-long fight to guarantee health coverage as a fundamental right for every American, the platform draft says. As part of that guarantee, Americans should be able to access public coverage through Medicare or a public option. By contrast, Donald Trump wants to repeal the ACA, leaving tens of millions of Americans without coverage.

Still not good enough, but it's a start. One more thing to thank Bernie for.

(18,319 posts)1. Didn't Hillary Clinton try to get this done in 1994?
Didn't Sanders abandon his attempt in 2009?
Give credit where credit is due.

(12,958 posts)5. Yes, partisans have been trying to convince us that
The party should have no core beliefs, and that having a platform is too rigid.
They are still stuck fighting the primaries, IMHO.

The big money in politics leaves me cynical however.
