Sanders Scores Platform Victory, Calls for $15 Minimum Wage

By CATHERINE LUCEY AND KEN THOMAS, ASSOCIATED PRESS ORLANDO, Fla. — Jul 9, 2016, 4:39 AM ET

Bernie Sanders' crusade to shape the Democratic party platform scored a win late Friday night, with the approval of an amendment calling for increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 over time.

The fight to get more explicit platform language around wages showed the Vermont senator's campaign still fighting for the liberal issues that made up his "political revolution" even as his clout fades.

In the weeks since Hillary Clinton clinched the Democratic nomination, her primary rival won a few policy concessions and influenced the party's platform. But he's also angered fellow lawmakers for not promptly endorsing his primary foe and has seen his influence wane as President Barack Obama and Sen. Elizabeth Warren stepped in to unify the party behind its presumptive nominee.

Sanders is still seeking more platform concessions at the party meeting in Orlando that broke up just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday, with plans to return later in the day. But he appears to be winding down this period of denouement, with his endorsement of Clinton now expected to come at a joint event next week.

get automatic increases, with true inflation indexed in (not excluding costs of transportation, housing, utilities etc excluded from the calculations as is currently done).

He doesn't care if Democrats boo him. He doesn't care if Hillary supporters trash him. He does care about the average American and he'll be downright obnoxious if that's what it takes to get the job done for them.

$15 won't become law, but it's a good starting point. Hillary's $12 an hour federal with higher rates in some states and cities is much more likely to make it through, but this will get her to start with $15 and accept $12 rather than start with $12 and accept $10.

This must be tied to CPI either way though or we'll be right back in the same situation in 20 years. Even if they tie it to a % of CPI with some limits, it will extend the life of the minimum wage being close to a living wage for several decades.

You have 538 members who have to agree on a minimum wage that varies from state to state and city to city. She has to get that through a Republican controlled Congress who view such issues as an assault on state rights.

How do you tell Texas they have to $14/hr and Louisiana they can pay as low as $12/hr when they have compering industries?

How do you tell New York City they have to pay $15/hr while Long Island can pay $13/hr?

If my office is in New Jersey, but I'm a contractor who moves job sites month to month often bouncing from city to city and state to state - which minimum wage applies?

In central Florida. But I do have concerns in areas I hunt and fish.

Both in rural north Florida and rural Louisiana. Even business owners may not make that kind of money. Hell, just living in a real house and not a trailer means you are seen as well off.

Forcing these guys to pay $15 an hour will drive more folks to Wal Mart.

I would support more an increase in SS payments, more support for higher paid state and county workers. And an option for single payer healthcare so poor rural folk do not have to spend so much of their income on health care.

We need to bring more Federal support for our poor rural whites and blacks to remind them that any past prosperity they had was due to strong federal programs. Supported by the Democratic Party!

And experience poor rural communities. $15 an hour is considered well off. Where is the money in these areas going to come from? Unless the government finds a way to funnel income into these areas, having a $15 minimum wage is like passing a law that everyone gets a unicorn.

Harvesting pine trees and commercial fishing is about all there is. And government work. Making small business in these areas pay $15 an hour will just create a black market economy.

Going to come from. Where I live it is a sin not to pay $15 an hour. But go to Dixie or Gilcrest county Fl and the money is not there. Few national employers and lots of really, really small businesses. Most, if I guess, operating on cash.

And many of those businesses owners are lucky not to live in a trailer.

Why not lower it $1.29 per year instead?

The economics of raising the wage has been studied by people far more qualified than both of us, and the science is in.

From government outlays be it SS, SS disability, food stamps(not cash but infuses liquids into the economy).

Or government jobs(teacher, Post Office, etc). Or medical. Some of these places donor even have Wal marts.

To almost double the minimum wage all that would need to be increased. And some government wages would be as the do not all pay $15. Do that and remove or greatly lower medical cost and it would work.

I favor $15 but we need to be strategic and realize that without other mitigating actions it could cause some people problems.

And if done wisely perhaps we could finally start getting some rural votes.

That depends on who you're asking. Bernie's clout continues to grow in some circles as he faces incredible odds in a fight against entrenched powers for the rights of average Americans.

But hey, we're all a hah-hap-happy family!

Right?

Last week, people were saying, "who?".

Some ego on this guy right? Fighting for basic rights for Americans. Oh but wait, he didn't endorse right away, so it doesn't count.

Well done again, Senator. Keep pushing. This is shaping up to be a platform both sides can get firmly behind.

EDIT: Not implying it's ONLY him making the platform look so good
