Buzz is building on Capitol Hill for Indiana Gov. Mike Pence to be Donald Trumps running mate.
Republican lawmakers, some of whom have close ties with Pence from the more than a decade he spent in the House, say the battleground state governor could be instrumental in helping Trump develop the relationships he needs in Washington.
GOP House members praised Pence, 57, as a proven fundraiser and principled social conservative they could work with to influence Trump in the Oval Office. Former colleagues say Pence, who started his career as a conservative radio talk show host in Indiana, is as skilled a communicator as the party has.
They gushed about how he could help unite establishment Republicans and grassroots conservatives behind Trump, who has otherwise struggled to bring together a fractured party. Id be dancing in the aisles, said Rep. John Carter (R-Texas), who says he attended Bible study with Pence when they were both in Washington. Hes one of the best weve ever had in Congress. Id love to see Mike Pence be the guy. Itd be awesome.

(6,829 posts)almost every traditional 'red state' is a battleground state, especially if they went blue in 2008, like Indiana did.

(3,072 posts)Pence is extremely dull and is losing to the dems in his reelection bid for governor, he has become so unpopular. His approval rating was in the 30's in Indiana earlier this year. The only people willing to say yes to Trump are those that are severely damaged.

(14,566 posts)Pence is a smarmy, arrogant ass.
But, he is competent (for a republican) and has held down meaningful elective positions.
He does not change anything much, marginally might get a few of the half sane Rs who are repulsed by Trump but looking to vote for him, he isn't a guy who gets too many of them, but maybe a few.
Indiana electorally, meh, that is a state that if Hill wins it is a blowout, it had a modest number of EVs and is far from the breaking point.
Media respect him, but he isn't sexy enough for them to get all gushy over him.
Last word to describe him is dynamic.
Trump can, and very possibly will do worse, but ...

(3,072 posts)Even a lot of 3rd rate republicans like Ernst are running from him like the plague. Pence is in a tough spot right now but he could still have a future. Why nuke himself over a close reelection for governor of Indiana?
