Bayh shocker upends battle for Senate control

For months, Chuck Schumer toiled on a seemingly fruitless task: Trying to persuade former Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh, who’d insisted for years that he was done with politics, to mount a comeback — and give Democrats a big boost in their bid to retake the Senate.

On Monday, the New York senator got his wish when Bayh jumped into the Indiana race against GOP Rep. Todd Young. The surprise entry by the former two-term senator and governor instantly upended the Senate landscape by putting in play a red state that had been all but written off by Democrats.

Bayh has baggage as a Washington insider and Obamacare supporter in a red state. But he also comes with nearly $10 million in the bank, statewide name recognition and strong ties to Democratic leaders. Now, Democrats are favored to win two states and are legitimately competitive in another half-dozen — improving the odds that Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will bequeath the title of majority leader to Schumer, who will take over running the Democratic Caucus next year.

Though Democrats have long been bullish on their chances of taking back the Senate with Republicans defending 24 seats to Democrats’ 10, their momentum suffered a significant blow last month when GOP Florida Sen. Marco Rubio decided to seek reelection — turning that seat from a likely Democratic pickup to a tossup at best.

and conceivably Trump's VP choice. Pence had hid his strong social and religious conservative agenda from voters until he was office, and now he stands a real chance of losing his bid for reelection. A popular former Democratic governor entering the senate race could tilt the political climate even farther against Pence.

Pence is being vetted for Trump's VP but was reportedly waiting for a "call" to tell him how he should serve in future. This bad news may just be the "call."

And, BTW, he's running in fucking IN!

So if he wins, we have a Democratic US Senator from fucking Indiana.

How is that bad? And what is the alternative?

Sorry, Eugene Debs does not win a Senate seat in IN. But Democrat Bayh can help Dems gain the majority in the US Senate.

We need that desparately.

That's what this about.

I remember thinking, are Democrats like these really that much better than Republicans? Well thanks Repukes for reminding me that yes, even the most conservative Democrat is better than a Republican. There was a time many decades ago when that wasn't necessarily the case, but with the Repukes having completely purged themselves of moderates there is no longer such thing as a Republican who's to the left of a Democrat.

I lived in Indiana when he and Lugar were the two. I liked Lugar better. I called Bayh's office often then, and there was one thing certain, he would vote the opposite of my concerns. If you guys think he's the best way to win, I'm with you. I think about the Supreme Court all the time. Maybe he will go to the left under pressure, different from a different pressure then in the mid 2000s.

After all he made his millions, and his dad was kick ass. No republican is better than a democrat now, but Richard Luger was better than Evan Bayh then.

Well that and the fact that Lugar had the audacity to befriend a certain black Democrat. To the Republican electorate that's an unforgivable sin. Thankfully Mourdock was too loony even for today's Indiana.

He's a good person and a pretty solid D. A moderate with a pretty good (if not 100%) record on environment, education, and LGBT rights.

Back in the day when we Ds couldn't seem to win elections, I thought of him as a viable option, especially for VP (apparently so did Obama who nearly picked him over Biden!).

As pointed out above, we have a big tent (which serves and symbolizes us very well ).

Another Dem in the Sen!

"Don't rock the boat" moderate. Indiana never struck me as a state that wanted a barn burner in office. Excitement and Indiana go together about as well as oil and water. I bet Bayh wins in a landslide.

Then, we look to our north, and we see Scott Wanker and that horrific Ron Johnson. At least Feingold is moving well in the polls. It could be that three new D senators come from the midwest, Duckworth, Bayh, and Feingold. That would be a coup!
