Did Perot go through a convention? What am I forgetting?

Though he had a distinguished military career, Admiral Stockdale is perhaps best remembered as Mr. Perot's running mate in the 1992 campaign. Mr. Stockdale was first selected as a stand-in on the ticket, since Mr. Perot needed to name a vice presidential candidate in order to qualify for the ballot in several states. Mr. Perot later kept Mr. Stockdale on after he fired his professional advisers, who wanted him to run a more conventional campaign with a better-known and more experienced running mate.

It is easily in my top five, perhaps it is number one? And yet I still felt sorry for Admiral Stockdale. I won't feel sorry for this pick:

Admiral Stockdale was in over his head from the get-go, but we learned he may have been experiencing early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease so I'm willing to give him a pass.

So the suggestion that Trump will emulate Perot and chose one running mate and then another doesn't make any sense at all. If Trump does that, it's not going to be based on a Perot model, but simply something Trump does by himself.

Stockdale wasn't the only one.

that I had to look it up online. In any case, he did not select one VP candidate and then switch to another one after the convention. The only time that's happened was in 1972.

They're trying to not even let him pick the running mate.
