2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMSNBC just reported that Clinton has narrowed her VP search to three people.
Tim Kaine, the senator and former governor from Virginia.
Tom Perez, the Secretary of Labor.
Tom Vilsack, the Secretary of Agriculture and former governor of Iowa.
My prediction is that she goes with Vilsack.

(108,990 posts)Which he legally reported in Virginia -- but most states do not have such lax rules on accepting gifts and I don't think this would be a good feature for a V.P.
Here's a short interview with Vilsack, the former Iowa Governor who is now Sec of Agriculture. I think he comes across well.

Hillary isn't the flashy, new model car type that everybody wants, she's the pragmatic safe car that won't let you down.
Hillary needs somebody who reinforces her strengths and can look like an adult compared to Trumps ticket.
Castros resume is to low key, and he's too young, the contrast would be a big difference between he and Hillary.

(1,339 posts)http://www.fas.usda.gov/newsroom/statement-agriculture-secretary-tom-vilsack-trans-pacific-partnership-agreement
"An agreement on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations provides a more level playing field in trade for American farmers. The agreement would eliminate or significantly reduce tariffs on our products and deter non-science based sanitary and phytosanitary barriers that have put American agriculture at a disadvantage in TPP countries in the past. Despite these past barriers, countries in the Trans-Pacific Partnership currently account for up to 42 percent of all U.S. agricultural exports, totaling $63 billion. Thanks to this agreement and its removal of unfair trade barriers, American agricultural exports to the region will expand even further, particularly exports of meat, poultry, dairy, fruits, vegetables, grains, oilseeds, cotton and processed products.
"The TPP agreement would not be possible without the extraordinary efforts of the negotiating team at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, assisted by the dedicated staff of USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service and the Office of the Chief Economist. I'd also like to thank the formal trade advisors and experts from agricultural commodity groups who provided valuable market information and creative proposals to better inform U.S. negotiators. Collectively, their efforts have led to a strong deal for American agriculture.
"Failing to grasp this opportunity would be a mistake: worse than just losing out on potential gains, our producers would fall behind other countries that are negotiating their own preferential arrangements in TPP countries. We are committed to working with Congress within the framework of the recently-passed Trade Promotion Authority to obtain a strong bipartisan understanding of and support for this historic trade deal that benefits farmers, ranchers, and all those who live, work and raise families in rural communities."

Potential Clinton VP Perez still supports trade deal
http://www.politico.com/story/2016/07/tom-perez-trade-pacific-225067
Labor Secretary Tom Perez, a potential Democratic vice presidential pick, isn't backing down from his support for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the trade deal opposed by Hillary Clinton.
The debate over trade has roiled the Democratic Party, with President Barack Obama and many congressional leaders supporting the agreement and both Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders opposing it. The position is a reversal of sorts for Clinton, who has traditionally supported trade deals and spoke favorably of the TPP when she was secretary of state.

"There were winners and losers in NAFTA. And that's the reality of what it was," Perez said. "And the biggest challenge that we have to learn from from NAFTA was that the provision of NAFTA said that all the other countries had to do was comply with their own laws. And if their own laws are Swiss cheese, and that was the case in Mexico, well then you're not asking them to do much."

Maybe once it became clear that Trump would win the GOP nod, the demographic benefit of having a hispanic person on the ticket decreased, for obvious reasons. Or maybe it was something else. I dont know.
My hesitation with Castro is he has a thin record on the issues.

Social scientists have researched the effect of facial hair on the electability of Presidential candidates, and currently consider facial hair to have a negative effect on candidates.[10][21][22] Today, the existence of facial hair on potential presidential candidates is regularly noted (albeit somewhat jokingly) as a harmful factor.[23][24]

(7,596 posts)Despite the grievances of people here, I think these are okay choices. Tim Kaine seems like an okay guy and I don't give a shit if he's "boring". She's going to capture the Hispanic vote anyway so she doesn't need a shamelessly pandering pick like Julian Castro.

(7,596 posts)Although, speaking of Perez, it's EXTREMELY unusual to pick someone who's never served in Congress or has been a governor. Kind of a strike against him. I also think the guy is pretty unknown even to people who closely follow politics. He certainly was not on my radar until Clinton started vetting him for VP.

(30,481 posts)I'm not sure how significant her VP pick is going to be. Clinton is a brand. Everyone knows of her and everyone has an opinion. Mentioning her name in any setting will start a heated debate. Clinton is the show.
At the same time I do think it would be significant if she brought Hispanic on board. We need to fight in every area for equal representation.

(764 posts)I am curious the source on this one but would not surprise me. I bet any of the 3 would be easy for Clinton to work with, to have just down the hall to bounce ideas off of as I recently heard on MSNBC. Clinton has got to get the white vote back on her side if she is to govern effectively next 4 years so she is probably going to choose one these 3.

(15,372 posts)right about anything related to Hillary? IMO, this is part of the ongoing media speculation, just as they create "horse-races" and differences where none really exist as well. And just as they continue to enable the GOP in its constant scandal-mongering.
Until Hillary herself says something otherwise, I will continue to believe that her VP selection will not be any one of these individuals.
But I will support her and the running mate of her choice. Period.
