The spire of the iconic Manhattan building will be illuminated in red on two sides and blue on the other two sides — red for GOP candidate Mitt Romney, blue for President Obama.

As each state is projected by CNN and electoral votes are allocated to the candidates, that candidates color will rise on the spire.

He who hits 270 first and whose color hits the top of the spire first — wins.

It’s not the first time the building has been used to signal presidential election results, CNN notes. In 1932, when commercial television had only been available a few years, a searchlight on the Empire State Building was used to announce the election of New York-born Franklin Delano Roosevelt as President.
