Plot thickens: Trump ditched a scheduled meeting with donors and flew to New York.

On a bright sunny Tuesday morning, the Trump Leadership Council gathered at FirstEnergy Stadium for their second official meeting. The group of 40 CEOs and top executives had flown to Cleveland to attend the Republican National Convention and meet with the nominee presumptive, billionaire businessman Donald Trump.

This was the second meeting of the council; the first convening happened a few weeks ago with the nominee presumptive at Trump Tower in New York. The companies represented were there to ostensibly advise Trump on 10 business sectors, such as transportation, healthcare, etc. But it was understood that each of the companies had either already donated money to his campaign, or would in the future—and most were sponsoring convention-related events in Cleveland, according to three people involved in the council.

The group of 40 from companies such as Continental Resources, BNSF Railway and C Spire mingled with Republican members of Congress around breakfast tables set up on one of the stadium’s concourses. The Republican representatives addressed the group, ostensibly stalling for Trump. Rep. Tom Price from Georgia mentioned the plagiarism scandal over Trump’s wife Melania’s speech the evening before. Price blamed the liberal media, who he said, had made the whole thing up, according to people present.

Eventually, though, the speeches ran out and Trump never showed. He had, they found out later, unexpectedly flown back to New York overnight with no word on when he might return. The group was led out to the football field, where NFL champions the Cleveland Browns play, to take pictures before they were let go with no information about when and if a third meeting might take place.

Now maybe he never intended to meet with the donors. Or maybe he just had to get out of Dodge. Whatever the reason, it does not bode well for the Trump Campaign's chances in November.

It certainly seems that this was prompted by the Melania speech foofaraw. Watch for someone being dismissed from Trump's staff shortly. That may tell more of the story. If it was a prankster, the beans may get spilled publicly, and not by Trump's campaign. Sort of like the "Art of the Deal" ghost-writer spilling the beans on that book.

Trump's not all that bright, really. Greedy people with monster egos are among the most easily pranked.

Kind of sums up the whole social dichotomy- our First Lady has her own compelling and inspiring ideas. The proposed Republican First Lady will even plagiarize a speech about the value of work.

Unreal!

We all know Melania Trump's speech introducing her husband to the voters - a strange thing to need to do here, because everyone in America knows who Donald Trump is - contains a couple of paragraphs from the speech Michelle Obama gave to introduce Barack Obama to the voters in 2008.

What's not quite so well known, is there are a couple of sentences in Melania's speech that came from Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up."

Ivanka Trump alleged that The Donald forcibly sexually assaulted her out of anger when his hair restoration went badly. She called it rape but I think that later she withdrew that word. His lawyer, however, stated that a husband, by definition, cannot "rape" his spouse.

What are the GOP going to do when he really melts down, say with only 1 day left of the Convention? This is now without a doubt NOT a guy who should be receiving classified intelligence briefings.

Is there a bait and switch plan in place for just such an emergency? Who pulls the trigger on that one and is it another Karl Rove pet to the rescue? Who does Reince Priebus have in his pocket these days? Does it then go to Ted Cruz as the candidate who finished 2nd in the primary? Does the GOP even have rules about this situation?

Many people have been saying he'd balk when the going got tough, and that he doesn't do reality well at all. I don't foresee him quitting, but I can see him melting down and this sure looks like a major symptom to me. The MSM could really end his campaign and possibly his career, right now, if they pushed him hard enough.

So there are 3 mysterious goings on, here: 1. He did not meet with the donors that he and the GOP are desperate for. 2. He flew out to NY unexpectedly. 3. He is turning up at the convention when he wasn't scheduled.

It's all very curious.

Correction: The original version of this story mischaracterized the event, which was a meeting of corporate advisors. After the story was published, a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign and an organizer of the group told TIME that the candidate was never scheduled to attend the meeting. The Trump Leadership Council explicitly states in internal documents for its members that there is no expectation that they make political donations to Trump or the convention. The story also incorrectly described the attendees of the event and the championship record of the Cleveland Browns.
