Hillary Clintons choice for presidential running mate, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, is a Harvard Law grad who cut his teeth as a young lawyer fighting for fair housing issues, winning a $100 million jury verdict against Nationwide Insurance over allegedly discriminatory lending practices.
Like Clinton, Kaine is a lawyer; he graduated from Harvard in 1983, a decade after Clinton earned her own law degree from Yale. He took nearly a year off before graduating to work as a missionary in Honduras. Unlike many in his class who vaulted into Big Law careers, Kaine joined a small firm in Richmond, now called McCandlish Holton, where he focused largely on fair housing matters.
Kaines most high-profile case was brought on behalf of a local non-profit, Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME), which alleged that Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. had discriminated against African-American neighborhoods through the practice known as redlining.
The case went to trial in 1998, after Kaine had become Richmonds mayor. The jury sided with HOME and returned a $100 million verdict against Nationwide. The verdict was later overturned by Virginias highest court, which sided with lawyers for the insurer at Kirkland & Ellis. HOME later reached a $17.5 million settlement with Nationwide...

(32,610 posts)why Hillary picked him. Both have spent their entire life actually working to right the wrongs...instead of just yapping about their personal theories.
Both are DOERS.

Also has great chemistry with Clinton. They look right together. Before she chose, I skimmed an article about the choices that included photos of Clinton campaigning with each one. She and Kaine leapt out at me. I was like, Oh yeah, it's gotta be him. I guess others saw the same thing.

(2,342 posts)And Clinton as well. I don't want to start a belated primary battle. It's just that I am.sometimes floored at the resumes and qualifications on our side. To think that Hillary had 30 possibilities and a short of five? candidates while Trump had republicans openly saying they would never be on his ticket. Such a contrast.
Very easy on the eyes!

(45,451 posts)He has spent much of his career supporting civil rights and social justice, but people who don't know his background would see a white man from the south and jump to incorrect conclusions. That is a powerful thing that will bring in the right types of voters since Hillary already has minorities and women and anti-Trumpers.
