2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhat election other than the Presidential is most important to you this year?
The most important election for me is the Hawaii Senate race. Former Governor Linda Lingle did a lot of very incompetent things that hurt Hawaii, and she cannot be allowed to successfully re-enter Hawaii life. The Democratic primary is contested between current 2nd District Congresswoman Mazie Hirono and former 2nd District Congressman Ed Case, who is a DINO. I really want to see Mazie win the race and Ed Case and Linda Lingle lose.
Share with us, be it: Governor, Senate, Congress, Mayor, City Council etc. - everyone cares about the White House; I hope to get some interesting responses.

(27,247 posts)From what I've been hearing, Democrats have a good chance of taking that seat for the first time in 46 years! But it's going to be tough, because even Bill Clinton couldn't win that seat during a relatively liberal era (1974).

(43,049 posts)don't forget that the entire House is again up for election this year.
My Congressman, Tim Bishop (NY1), is in for another hard fight with a teabagger, probably the same one as last time. After 6 terms he won by only 500 votes last time, so to say we're worried is an understatement.
Gary Ackerman (NY5) just anounced his retirement. While his district down the road should be reliably Democratic, even after redistricting, he's been in Congress for 30 years now so who knows what will happen when the seat is open. (Look what happened when Weiner quit!)
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is up for her normal election after being appointed and a special election. She won the special with 63% of the vote and the Republicans have little to go up against her so we're pretty confident she'll be back-- but you never know...
And, there's all that local stuff, including a hometown girl and member of our local Democratic Club running for State Assembly.

(18,638 posts)The GOP has made him a specific target this fall, and are making more resources available to unseat him. He does a great job, and it's flattering that they want him out so bad, but I'll be donating and volunteering all I can. Indeed, I'll probably have to focus more on his campaign than the national election this fall.
His wife is Pulitzer Prize winning Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist Connie Schultz. When she last appeared on MSNBC, she spoke of their courtship. She said she gave him a questionaire to make certain he was a true progressive and shared her values before she'd go on the first date.
I love them both.

(54,428 posts)As Texas Senate races are hopeless, I have made it a point to contribute to Sherrod Brown's
re-election campaign already this year. We need to keep him in the Senate, although EVERY
Senate race where we have a ghost of a chance is vital. Karl Rove and the Kochs know that
too, and they have more money than we do. "La fuerza bruta," as Unamuno put it as the
onset of the Fascist uprising in Spain in 1936.

So he quit.
Some other mentally and physically lazy repug whose been bouncing

has got repug bucks behind him.
Would love to see one of the Democratic Party candidates win this.

There's also a good chance for a pick up in Illinois 10th...as well as a solid chance to return Bill Foster in the 14th. Thank goodness for Democrats who redrew the map here...a solid chance for several Democratic pick-ups...

(13,447 posts)The DREAM Act made it on the ballot after a petition last year and it's very likely that Gay Marriage will also be on the ballot as a petition drive is underway right now.
Obama and Senator Cardin will easily win here in Maryland, as well as the incumbent Democratic Congresspeople. The BIG race will be those two ballot questions. Whether or not we get to keep the DREAM Act and Gay Marriage as laws in Maryland.

The real question is, who becomes the Democratic nominee. It's a tight race between Murphy and Susan Bysiewicz. Either would be fine with me, although I prefer Murphy.

I do NOT want to see Pence as Governor for 4-8 years, particularly with a solid Republican majority in the Legislature. I haven't always been fond of Daniels but Pence would be waaaaaaaay worse IMHO. Hopefully, the union outrage over "right-to-work" and other anti-union initiatives signed into law over the past two sessions will rally enough people to put Dems back into the Governors Mansion and, hopefully, at least one part of the Legislature.

(1,033 posts)We need to take the House back. We won't be able to vote out Snyder or any Republican Senators until 2014. But we can put Democrats back in the House and prevent the GOP from continuing to pass their ridiculously absurd agenda here in the state.
Seeing how low Snyder's approval rating is and how few people like the emergency financial manager situation, on top of a likely Obama win, I think that's likely to happen. But we need to work hard here in Michigan. The local news media here, even the normally liberal Detroit Free Press, seems cozy with the Governor, so it wouldn't surprise me to see Republicans maintain their majority if Dems don't get out and work.

(20,450 posts)Senate race is important to me.
She truly represents the anti-Wall Street crowed. Brown lies and pretends, but he's a shill.
We truly cannot afford for Liz Warren to lose.
