(52,253 posts)and this was largely kept hidden from the public. there were occasional stories about it, but it was largely glossed over.
today, the republicans would attack him on this (in thinly coded language, of course, like, "he can't stand up... to our enemies" and the press would howl and cry and laugh and dwell on it to the point no one would pay attention to policy or legislation.
this really goes back to watergate. the press started to dream of how to take down whoever the president was for any reason they could find. then, between budget cuts and laziness, they figured out they could bring people down without actual facts, and here we are.
now, "breaking news" might be "a senior republican says people are saying that they are feeling that the democrats are some negative thing or another."
