So I値l ask the question outright.

Exactly how stupid do you have to be to believe that Hillary Clinton actually said that she was going to raise taxes on the middle class?

Precisely how delusional do you have to be to think that Hillary – completely contrary to everything she has said from the beginning of her campaign until now – suddenly decided to do a complete about-face and announce in front of a cheering crowd that her real plan was to raise taxes on the millions of middle-class voters who are supporting her?

How off-kilter does your comprehension have to be to embrace the notion that Hillary, in the midst of talking about Trump wanting to cut taxes for the super-rich, surreptitiously “slipped in” her own plan to raise taxes on the working class?

I suppose there are still people out there who think Creedence Clearwater had a hit with a song about there being a bathroom on the right, and that Madonna sang about the fact that last night, she dreamt of some bagels.

But seriously, folks – exactly how dumber than dumb can the already dumber-than-dumb get?

What kind of person insists that Hillary’s words are the exact opposite of what she said in an attempt to discredit her, and bring attention to themselves?

Well, I believe R.E.M. answered that question when they sang, “Let's pee in the corner, Let's pee in the spotlight.”

I am notoriously lyrically deaf amongst my friends

I thought Chimnawumba were saying:
I get up down
But I get up again
Cause it happens in the lead guitar

Grateful Dead "Sugar Magnolia" line is "pays my tickets when I speed" for at least 10 years I thought Jerry was saying "feeds my chickens when I sleep". Living near Hampton Va I probably heard that song hundreds of times before I got it.

One of the reasons I am such an REM fan is because I could pretty much make up my own lyrics. What did he say? Who cares, it'll change next time.

i'm the sun and you'll not tell
we combinin' in the scythe
we could gather throw a fit
Up to buy Arkady bars that kitchen times but not me in
sit and try for the big heat no wastin' time sittin' still"

I seriously was convinced Stipe was purposefully creating word salad on like 1/2 of the songs on their 1st three albums, and that at least some % of the lyrics were just made up words, so it didn't matter I didn't know the actual words because there was no chance they made sense anyway.

That said, Rockville was one of my favorite early REM tracks ... which was a really trippy song to me at the time ... I've been into them since shortly after Murmur came out, still have the vinyl, and that song was like ... wait ... WHAT SORCERY IS THIS? I understand EVERY WORD!?! And they are a GREAT set of lyrics, IMHO.

That was the 2nd song I taught myself to sing and play on the guitar, sitting in my college dorm room circa 1987 ... 2nd after 'Here Comes a Regular' ... which is a LOT easier, basically 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door', knocked down a 1/2 step.

I listened to little other than them for several years. You are right about the word salad but that was what I liked about it.

Several conversations like this with people as REM got more and more popular

What's this song about?
Me: Don't know. Whatever you want it to be.
What did he say there?
Me: What did you hear? Then it's that.
I don't understand this song
Me: it's poetry

I was in the Army from 90-93 in Germany. One of the strange elements was meeting guys who had no idea about alternative music. "Nevermind" has just come out and by mid90 it had saved music. When a new recruit would show up they'd be asked what was going on back in the States. "What's on MTv?" "That shit he listens to" was one classic response. Mind you I had to explain to some of these guys that "Spinal Tap" wasn't real. Several of these guys now regularly post pro-Trump anti-Hillary stuff on Facebook.

When "Out of Time" came out it felt like a victory lap for me as a longtime fan. Hearing "Losing My Religion" played in a GI frequented German night club was like my own personal inside joke. I read an interview in which Buck recalled a conversation with Mills while making the album. They knew the ways things worked and that their next release would go #1. Buck,"If we are going to have a #1 song why not put a mandolin on it?" Mills laughed and said, "Yeah, why the hell not?"

That sums up REM to me. Whatever you want it to be and why the hell not?

A few wingnuts might be stupid enough to actually believe these things were said and intended to be said that way, but most like to pretend it's some kind of Freudian slip, that they caught the "real" desires and intentions of the evil liberals sneaking through. They love having their imaginary "Ah, hah! Gotcha!" moment.

Either that, or they think the Democratic candidates somehow deserves to be interpreted badly no matter what they really said or intended to say or even actually believe, so they'll gleefully push a deliberate misinterpretation on that basis.
