2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWatch for sleepers down the ballot!
Here in my congressional district (MN CD-4), we have an outstanding progressive incumbent member of Congress, Betty McCollum, who is running once again for re-election. She'll win easily, as always. But there's a sleeper candidate in the primary election next Tuesday.
His name is Steve Carlson, and he's a teabagger extremist, who filed to run as a DFL party candidate. He's pro-life, anti-LGBT and many other ugly things. But, he's running as a Democrat. He doesn't have a chance, but it demonstrates why people need to turn out for primary elections and learn who the candidates are.
In many states, a candidate can run in primaries for either party, simply by filing for that office and party. That's what happened here. So, on our Democratic primary ballot, we have a self-described teabagger running for this seat in the House of Representatives.
Who's on your ballot? You should always know the candidates and you should always vote in every primary election. If you don't, you might get something you don't want.
Just a warning for people who don't pay attention to primary elections.

(13,871 posts)A guy ran in the Dem primary to challenge Joe "you lie" Wilson. He had run twice before as a republican and once as a libertarian. He was pro-gun, anti-choice and very anti-gay, and the Dem Party actually endorsed his opponent, which is rare in a primary. Since most of the action is in the GOP primary here, there was low voter turnout and the real Dem only beat the imposter by about 4 points.

(81,322 posts)We can't afford to drop our guard for even a nanosecond with these sneaky-ass fiends. They invest TONS of time, money, and manpower in stuff like this. Because they understand that, the way the demographics are changing in this country, it's becoming more and more evident that they can't win unless they cheat. And they'll look for ANY and ALL ways to do so. Kinda like an ant infestation.
I remember writing one post awhile back, called "Think Termites." Termites are tenacious and opportunistic little shits. They'll look for ANY weakness, ANY opening, ANY advantage, ANY opportunity to get in and take over and do damage. That's what we're up against with the CONS.
We CANNOT drop our guard for even so much as a nanosecond.

(146,317 posts)There's always someone looking for a way to corrupt things. Now, in the election I mentioned, there's no chance in Hell that the usurper will get more than a few votes, but that's because we have a strong, well-known and well-loved person as an incumbent. But, such things can happen and go unnoticed by many voters.
It's crucial that informed people actually vote in primaries, even it if seems there's no reason to bother. There's always a reason, and every election is important.

And we're up against some kinds of Death Eaters now, too. But they're not in some Harry Potter books. They're REAL.

(9 posts)I saw a HuffPo article earlier in the week about the possibility of defeating Paul Ryan in the primary by using Democrats to vote for his opponent. I called Thom Hartmann's show to get that word out but other callers mentioned that if you vote for one R in the primary, you can't vote for any Dems or your ballot is tossed? Is that the case in MN? Maybe that's why we have the obvious R running as a Dem and also why Finegold has a crazy pro-life challenger? Just so we're afraid to use the primary election to dump Ryan?

All we can do to combat that is BE INFORMED. If you are, you've already got a leg up on the other tribe.
