Seriously?? H1-B visas for fashion models?? (from Melania Trump story)

One version of the Melania story has that she initially came here on an H1-B visa. You know, the visa that is supposed to be for "highly skilled workers" so that America can create scientific and technical innovations, or something?

Sorry, I don't see fashion modeling as in that category. Although I detest the way I see the H-1B visa program currently being abused, I'm actually not totally opposed to it on a much more limited level, for truly accomplished and unique talents in STEM fields. I just don't see fashion modeling as being relevant in that way.

Most models use H1-B3 visas. Models seeking H1-B3s must be 'of distinguished merit or ability' - they do not have to be graduates, unlike most other H1-B applicants.

I would REALLY like to hear Clinton say that she wants to seriously look at the use and abuse of the H1-B visa program.

IIRC the theory behind allowing fashion models is that they promote American designers, whose high-end bespoke stuff is still generally made here.

The one that really surprised me was "clergy". I can't really think of a reasoning for that, other than the current US pastor shortage.

Amazing in a frustrating, how f*cked are we sort of way.

"High-skilled worker shortage", my ass.

And I'm not sure which is worse to be on that list, fashion models or pastors.

In 2008, for reasons that may or may not be clearer now, Rep. Anthony Weiner, a New York Democrat, launched a small crusade to bring more foreign models into the country amid of a flurry of activity in Congress on immigration reform. Specifically, he sponsored a bill that would have shifted models over to O-1 visas and given them a special quota of around 1,000 visas a year.

The bill would’ve satisfied both supermodels and startups and even attracted bipartisan support. Rep. Lamar Smith, a Republican immigration hardliner from Texas, told the Los Angeles Times that he could see Weiner, then single, “in a posh downtown New York City hotel celebrating the passage of this bill surrounded by hundreds of energized, wildly ecstatic fashion models. And you know for a fact he’s going to have an annual celebration. It’s almost too much to bear.”

They just had to take a shot, didn't they.

That the Trump organization would need a bunch of models. Why do they need so many models? Are there no American models?

He is applying for H1-B visas with waivers to bring in 76 housekeepers, valets, and cooks from overseas. And it has been reported this is not the first time.

too

Maybe she got an H1- B as a professional mail order bride

Or she could have come with a travel visa which would have given her enough time to marry the highest bidding rich stockbrocker in Manhattan as part of a sex for green card deal.

For example, Heidi Klum entered a modeling contest and was chosen as the winner over 25K entrants. The prize was a $500K modeling contract in New York. I'm sure if Melania had won some kind of contest or was well known in Europe we would have been told about it. I think she was unknown when she came here.
