With animal rights activists appearing/protesting at presidential events, I think this thread is relevant to this forum. I accidentally posted in GD:2016 instead of GD. But because of the amount of interest, and importance of the issue regarding animal welfare, as I said, relevant to our presidential campaign, I would hate for this thread to be ended. Thanks! How hard are you willing to work to improve your position in life? For one stray dog, the answer is: pretty darn hard.
During the 2016 Gobi March 4 Deserts race in China, extreme runner Dion Leonard from Scotland was racing through the rugged terrain of the Tian Shan mountain range. Thats when a stray female pooch (eventually and aptly named) Gobi started following him.
The runner figured that shed tire out eventually. She was a small dog, so keeping up with a life-sized human (who is an extreme jogger) probably didnt seem likely. But amazingly, the little dog kept up.

What is the US currency equivalent on of funds raised so far?
This has to be the most endearing story I've read in a long time.
Thanks for posting MoonRiver!

(6,121 posts)A close friend goes there regularly for business and she said that dogs are on the streets everywhere. They're cruelly treated and seen as pests, so I'm not surprised that a little stray dog would follow someone who treated it with kindness and compassion.
I hope little Gobi manages the trip well and is reunited with her running companion soon!
Great story. It made my day.

(6,592 posts)I'm in tears thinking about it. A society that treats domestic animals as pests disgusts me. (We're not great, but at least we try.)

(6,592 posts)I hope they have at least some animal rights activists.

(36,926 posts)There is a horrible dog torturing festival in Yulin, where they torture and kill thousands of dogs each year for "fun." A Chinese activist shows up every year and rescues as many dogs as he can.
This may contain more information than most are ready for.:

Edited to add that many animal rights organizations, including Humane Society International are working to end this horror. Hopefully pressure on the Chinese government will bring about change.

(13,776 posts)They would improve their image so much more by stopping this utterly disgusting event. I really don't know how people who are cruel to animals can live with themselves, whether it's tradition or not.

(36,926 posts)The same thing happens in Japan with the dolphin slaughter and other places that think it is great fun to torture and kill animals. The Chinese try to equate it to our slaughter houses, but there is one very big difference: we do not condone torture before killing. THEY DO.

(6,592 posts)We would not even have diplomatic relations with a country that would do that. They would be an international pariah.

But GD:2016 is for the 2016 election.
I love the story, of course--it's just that cluttering this forum with feel-good stories unrelated to the election seems counterproductive.

(36,926 posts)My mom and dad are in another urn in the living room. It's been 2 years since our last beloved doggie died, but my grand kids still look at the urns and talk about her. The other dog passed when they were either not born, or too young to remember. I also still have the most recently deceased one as my phone screen saver.
