The GOP made this, Now all is going to Hell in a hand basket

If it were not for the fact that the GOP brought this Trumpian disaster on themselves, I would almost feel bad for them. They spent the past seven years fueling hatred of all things Obama. Some in the party’s leadership thought they were being clever by nurturing the Tea Party, courting the “birthers”, and feeding anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant sentiment. Only now, when they see what the fruits of their labors have created, do they recoil in horror.

In many ways Donald Trump is the reductio ad absurdum of the past few decades of GOP politics. The efforts of some Republicans to distance themselves from their standard bearer is simply insufficient, at best, disingenuous, at worst. I, for one, can’t forget: their embrace of the Newt Gingrich-led “Park 51” campaign; their smiles at Sarah Palin’s hate-filled speeches; the coyness they demonstrated when confronted with the “birther” crowd; their “wink and a nod” at the bigotry that was on display when Arizona was passing its anti-immigrant legislation; or their outright refusal to consider any meaningful gun control measures in the face of the repeated slaughter of innocents.

2. Be sure to read the article to the end

Towards the end of the article, the author points out that we progressives need to address the grievances of the disaffected demographic that Trump is courting, so to prevent a Trump 2.0 in future elections.

It went too far too long ago. They won't listen to us. If we try, they will just get abusive (I know from real life experience).

It's up to reichwing media to slowly being their followers back to normalcy. Let Fox Propaganda Channel and whatever hate radio host they can get to go along with it to dial it back to a point where their listeners aren't preprogrammed hate zombies. Let them deal with the blowback. Let them clean up their own mess.

What? That they are white and no longer own the country?

Knowing the sensibilities here at DU, I hate to be racially specific, but what other grievances do they really have?

Oh, right... they all hate Hillary and want to see her hanged.

Did I miss anything?

7. I'm not so sure I agree with this 100%

Efforts have been made, but the hate and intolerance of RW talkers and pols have blocked every effort to actually accomplish anything. They will continue to do so, unless we can pack the legislature and change the rules so that tiny minorities of the right can effectively block the will of the people, who while not socialistic to be sure, are far more center left than the righties want to admit.

11. This imperative is a little too "white privilegey" for me

Unlike those of "disaffected" whites, miinority concerns and grievances are all too often treated as irrelevant or worse. Our complaints are dismissed as "whining" and we are called "disgruntled." "Why are they so ANGRY?!"

Rarely do we ever hear anyone tell either party that they must "address OUR grievances" in order to be taken seriously.

Example: Trump's failure to garner more than1% of the black vote is barely covered at all and, when it is, it's treated with a shrug, as if it's no big deal than one of the two major political parties has absolutely nothing to offer an entire swath of minority voters.

But let some white, mostly male voters complain that THEIR concerns aren't being catered to and everyone runs to the drawing board to figure out what needs to be done to make them happy.

Frankly, I'm tired of hearing about it. If these folks haven't yet figured out what's in their best interest - and that it ain't the current Republicans - then I say let them learn it the hard way. I'd rather the Dems focus their attention on strengthening the voting base that's already in their corner and of whom there are more than enough to whisk them across the finish line if only we stop treating them as if they don't matter.

So-called "fairness doctrines" would mean climate deniers on every science report on the climate.

Anti-vaxers on every report on childhood disease.

Birth certificate "truthers" on every show that discusses Obama's career and legacy.

Whitewater / Vince Foster "truthers" on every time Hillary is interviewed.

This article helps shed some light on the subject.

Democrats need to listen to the working class and to poor people. This is a big-tent party that could be even bigger. I'd love to see the Rethuglican Party go the way of the Whigs or the Know-Nothing Party.
