I am reading 'United States of Jihad' by Peter Bergen

It is a great book. I don't have the intellectual discipline to do book reports any more but my big takeaway is that many of the domestic jihadis come from secular, secular Muslim, Christian, and even Jewish backgrounds.

What they share is a profound alienation from American culture.

Some of the interesting anecdotes include frustrated parents taking their aspiring jihadi children to moderate Imams to dissuade them from violence and the Imams telling them violence is a perversion of Islam to no avail.

Another wannabe jihadist goes to Egypt and the Imam tells him he can do more for his people by becoming a physician or engineer.

I will say that Trump's bromides and panaceas will only make the problem exponentially worse.
