2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe State of the Clinton-Trump Race: Is It Over?
Nate Cohn @Nate_Cohn AUG. 15, 2016
It has been three weeks since Democrats gathered for their convention, and Hillary Clinton still holds a large and consistent lead in national and battleground state polls.
Her national lead over Donald J. Trump of seven to eight percentage points could slip a bit over the next few weeks. But it has been long enough that much of her expected convention bounce should have faded. It leaves Mr. Trump in an unenviable position: No modern candidate who has trailed by this much a few weeks after the conventions has gone on to win the presidency.
On that basis, you can expect a wave of articles about how the presidential race is basically over.
Thats probably a bit too strong, at least from a historical point of view. The Upshots model gives Mrs. Clinton an 88 percent chance of winning. Its about the same probability of hitting a field goal from the 20-yard line.
Thats a pretty good way to think about it. If Mrs. Clinton ultimately wins, we will probably look back and say she had more or less already won it by this point. If she loses, these next two months will be talked about for decades.

OP
It's not over until the votes are counted. I'll admit it looks good for Hillary right now, but

I want her to keep going and win with such a huge majority of electoral votes that Republicans will refer to November 8, 2016, as "Black Tuesday".

(4,404 posts)2. Definitely not. It's a LOOOOOOOOONG time between now and November 8th.
Not saying there's anything wrong with cautious optimism. I'm just not buying my champagne yet.

Unless I'm wrong and Trump's ego can stand running so far behind, he will bail. And he'll take all those campaign donations he's not spending with him, putting his entire campaign into the plus column and not caring whom he's disappointing. Suckers.
And if for some reason he's staying in, it's still over.
