In a move meant to bolster party unity, the former campaign manager of Bernie Sanderss failed presidential bid joined leaders of the Democratic National Committee on a conference call Monday night and pledged the senator from Vermont would actively campaign for Hillary Clinton this fall.
Jeff Weaver, who guided Sanderss surprisingly strong challenge to Clinton, said he was invited by DNC interim chairwoman Donna Brazile to be the featured guest on the call, which also included state party leaders, after meeting with in Washington earlier Monday.
I think it was a genuine effort on the part of the DNC to make sure Sanders supporters feel welcome, Weaver said of the call, during which he said Sanders would also campaign for down-ballot candidates and touted the work done in recent weeks to craft a progressive party platform.
The call, which was first reported by Politico, signaled a different relationship between the Sanders camp and the DNC than during the primary season.
