Michael Moore: Trump Is Self-Sabotaging His Campaign Because He Never Really Wanted the Job in the First Place
He's running for president to get a better deal for "The Apprentice."
By Michael Moore / AlterNet
August 16, 2016

Donald Trump never actually wanted to be president of the United States. I know this for a fact. I’m not going to say how I know it. I’m not saying that Trump and I shared the same agent or lawyer or stylist, or if we did, that would have anything to do with anything. And I’m certainly not saying I ever overheard anything at those agencies or in the hallways of NBC or anywhere else. But there are certain people reading this right now, they know who they are, and they know that every word in the following paragraphs actually happened.

Trump was unhappy with his deal as host and star of his hit NBC show, “The Apprentice” (and “The Celebrity Apprentice”). Simply put, he wanted more money. He had floated the idea before of possibly running for president in the hopes that the attention from that would make his negotiating position stronger. But he knew, as the self-proclaimed king of the dealmakers, that saying you’re going to do something is bupkus—DOING it is what makes the bastards sit up and pay attention.

snip//

Trump fell in love with himself all over again, and he soon forgot his mission to get a good deal for a TV show. A TV show? Are you kidding—that’s for losers like Chris Harrison, whoever that is (host of “The Bachelorette”). He was no longer king of the dealmakers—he was King of the World! His tiniest musings would be discussed and dissected everywhere by everybody for days, weeks, months! THAT never happened on “The Apprentice”! Host a TV show? He was the star of EVERY TV SHOW—and, soon, winning nearly every primary!

And then… you can see the moment it finally dawned on him… that “Oh shit!” revelation: “I’m actually going to be the Republican nominee—and my rich beautiful life is f#*@ing over!” It was the night he won the New Jersey primary. The headline on Time.com was, “Donald Trump’s Subdued Victory Speech After Winning New Jersey.” Instead of it being one of his loud, brash speeches, it was downright depressing. No energy, no happiness, just the realization that now he was going to have to go through with this stunt that he started. It was no longer going to be performance art. He was going to have to go to work.

Soon, though, his karma caught up with him. Calling Mexicans “rapists” should have disqualified him on Day One (or for saying Obama wasn’t born here, as he did in 2011). No, it took 13 months of racist, sexist, stupid comments before he finally undid himself with the trifecta of attacking the family of a slain soldier, ridiculing the Purple Heart and suggesting that the pro-gun crowd assassinate Hillary Clinton. By this past weekend, the look on his face said it all—“I hate this! I want my show back!” But it was too late. He was damaged goods, his brand beyond repair, a worldwide laughing stock—and worse, a soon-to-be loser.

But, let me throw out another theory, one that assumes that Trump isn’t as dumb or crazy as he looks. Maybe the meltdown of the past three weeks was no accident. Maybe it’s all part of his new strategy to get the hell out of a race he never intended to see through to its end anyway. Because, unless he is just “crazy,” the only explanation for the unusual ramping up, day after day, of one disgustingly reckless statement after another is that he’s doing it consciously (or subconsciously) so that he’ll have to bow out or blame “others” for forcing him out. Many now are sensing the end game here because they know Trump seriously doesn’t want to do the actual job—and, most importantly, he cannot and WILL NOT suffer through being officially and legally declared a loser—LOSER!—on the night of November 8.

Trust me, I’ve met the guy. Spent an afternoon with him. He would rather invite the Clintons AND the Obamas to his next wedding than have that scarlet letter (“L”) branded on his forehead seconds after the last polls have closed on that night, the evening of the final episode of the permanently canceled Donald Trump Shit-Show.

1. I bet there is a side bet going on, tens of millions type gambling, and he's manipulating the odds .

to get really rich, probably bet against himself and has to lose by at least 10% to make a billion dollars. That's a scenario that really makes sense, one where he empties the pockets of the likes of his Sultan billionaire buddy and a lot of rubes.

4. Very simple - he wants to profit off of this.

His deal with NBC fell through, so that source of money has dried up.

Instead, he's taken $80 million in political donations and hasn't spent a dime on TV ads. I suspect he plans to keep as much of that $80 million as he can.

would rather be right about Trump winning than he would rather prevent that from happening. Look at the end of the article where he encourages Trump to quit so Romney or Ryan can take over. What kind of person who is genuinely supporting Democrats would say something like that?

I know he's making Hollywood money, but I didn't realize it was enough to make him a secret GOPer. Well, not-so-secret GOPer, I mean, based on the lengths he went to demoralize and depress Democrats this year.

Moore said, "I think Trump's going to win guys." He said it on Bill Maher's show. The complacent at the polls part is what we all read into that simple statement.

He has been critical of her but I would not say he hates her. Late in the 2008 primaries, I remember him saying nice things about her in an interview, but saying he could not support her in the primaries because she voted for the Iraq War. I definitely would not call him a JPR-style hater.

9. As of 8/12/16 Trump has no office in Cincinnati, OH

SW OH is the reddest part of the state.

I am really thinking that Trump's campaign is one big scam and I wonder how much money
he and his family are skimming off the top or pulling in on other scams such as Ivanka
pimping the dress she wore @ the RNC?

Trump's other SW OH offices are located in county republican HQs.

http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/politics/blogs/2016/08/12/trump-opens-new-ohio-offices-none-hamilton-county/88631692/

Fewer than 90 days before the election, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced several offices in Ohio, but none are in key Hamilton County and many are inside county Republican Party headquarters.

Democrats have been critical of Trump's slow-to-organize ground game in the all-important swing state of Ohio. An internal email acquired by The Enquirer showed the campaign had yet to appoint key local leaders or open a campaign office in Hamilton County, a key swing county. No Republican, and few Democrats, have won the presidency without winning Ohio.

Amid that criticism, the Trump campaign announced 15 new campaign offices Friday. Last week, the campaign announced the opening of its headquarters in Columbus and the hiring of several key staff members, including a spokesman. Republican National Committee organizers have been in Ohio since 2013.

12. I've heard this theory before,

from many people. And every time I think it just may make sense, I remember Trump's giant ego. I don't think he thinks of being president of the U.S. is "work;" I think he relishes the idea of the biggest possible platform, much much bigger than any reality TV show. It's hard to imagine an ego that size, but Trump clearly has it.

His campaign for the presidency may have been , at the beginning, a lark, or a way to get more money (more attention, most likely). But now? As Moore says it's Holy shit, I actually did it! While laughing at his gullible supporters, whom he publicly insulted by saying that they'd still support him if he murdered someone in the streets, he's finding out just how outrageous he can be and get away with it.

I think he wants to be president, because he doesn't see that office as a public trust, but as an opportunity. Having the nuclear codes is proof, after all, that he is all powerful.

I disagree with the theory here. Trump's ego is too big to lose intentionally.

at risk of becoming one of the biggest losers of all time. I add...that a sharky businessman like himself always leaves multiple pathways out of a bad deal. He always has a way or two out.

I used to think one of the legit pathways was that the GOP would happily buy him out for hundreds of millions, to their benefit (a candidate that didn't win the primary can run as a moderate in the general!) and to Trump's benefit (huge profits running for president? A first!). Both the GOP and Trump get over on everyone else. Now....I think it's too late for this pathway to be as effective as it would have been a few weeks ago. Too late for the WH and getting on enough ballots....but, a shiny new sacrificial candidate (Pence, Romney) would help gop turnout and might save down-ballot races. Shoot....Kochs by themselves are going to spend almost a billion dollars on down-ballot races and issues...I bet they alone would chip in serious dollars.

More likely, I think, is a scenario where Trump just quits, leaving the gop high and dry. The Gop undermined him...didn't support him...many outright said they would support the other party's nominee. The day after quitting, Trump files a multi-billion dollar lawsuit for compensation and for damage to his brand. They won't go to court, but they'll settle for some obscene amount. Again, Trump profits by running for president

Either way...Trump wins and avoids a landslide loss.
