Yet throughout the campaign most media coverage gave the impression that Mr. Bush was a bluff, straightforward guy, while portraying Al Gore whose policy proposals added up, and whose critiques of the Bush plan were completely accurate as slippery and dishonest. Mr. Gores mendacity was supposedly demonstrated by trivial anecdotes, none significant, some of them simply false. No, he never claimed to have invented the internet. But the image stuck.

(1,265 posts)...is that it is beginning to look less and less like media herdthink and more and more like a focused and coordinated effort to make Trump president. It's possible that a group of rich and powerful idiots think that they can steer this racist/fascist/loose cannon toward accomplishing their own goals.
They thought that about Hitler too.

(41,836 posts)GWB won, and all the networks thought they were wrong, and changed their story that now Bush had won. The Supreme court said to stop the counting in Florida. The election was stolen. I wonder if they will try that again. Simply announcing that Trump won... with the Media as Biased as they are.. we need that Landslide that Obama had a few years back!

(1,447 posts)Obama was coming in after a disastrous GWB Jr in 08 an easy landslide with Palin by McCain's side. In 2012 it was *easier* to hold the Office and up against Mittens? No chance.
The problem isn't with HRC qualifications but there is a concern with election fatigue, name fatigue and also coming off of 2 terms, at least successful terms to date by the Obama administration unlike GWB Jr.
In my lifetime I have only seen the Party {either party} hold the E/O after holding it for two terms and that was HW Bush, after Reagan. Born in 71.
Good news is that Trump is such an idiot and the goodwill is on the side of the Obama Administration that even in the most uninspired turnout for 2016 Clinton has a great chance.
However, her numbers should be better considering how bad Trump is. November is still a very long time away in politics, too.
Cheers,
Sandy

(3,072 posts)I've heard every election in the past 120 years cited as how this election will turn out. Sure there are similarities between 1 election cycle to the next but elections tend to be overall unique. Anyone worried that history will repeat itself with such precision might need to calm down and get a drink.

(17,390 posts)Bush received a huge free pass on the absurdity of his proposals, while the narrative of the 2000 election was that Gore was not trustworthy. Likewise, the narrative is that Trump "tells it like it is," and the media seems to give him a free pass.
For example, there is no call for Trump to divest of himself of his assets even though his real estate businesses could create huge conflicts of interest with his role as President. Yet, the media plays up calls for Hillary to sever all ties with the Clinton Foundation.
