2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBloomberg reported a poll which showed that the military overwhelmingly prefer trump over Hillary,
but in the same poll they trust Hillary over the nuclear arsenal over trump.
Do these people even know WTF they are saying?

(52,233 posts)they haven't downloaded their anti-hillary talking points regarding nukes yet, so they may have unintentionally answered that question honestly.

(9,956 posts)...odd. But I had two family members serve during Bush's Iraq Wars. Did not vote for Bush and were never polled. Also, they - both male - said there were a lot of "gays in the military" - mostly female - and nobody minded.

(32,009 posts)The military is 31.6% non-Hispanic minority and 11.3% Hispanic. That means it is only 57% white.

(9,474 posts)for 22 years. No one, not even my friends knew anything about my politics. I was (and still am) an Independent, never discussed politics or religion as one's career could be destroyed in a skinny minute if one's commanding officer so desired. My last CO was a radical right religious zealot. Even the Command Chaplain warned me about him.
As a result of my own experiences, I put absolutely no stock in polls regarding the military. I, and most of my colleagues, would never have participated in a poll, much less expressed a political opinion. No matter personal feelings or political leanings, we were expected to support and defend the Constitution and follow the lawful orders of the Commander in Chief (lawful orders being the operative words here).

(68,868 posts)I am sure if one were to look at the history of governance in the world since 1776, one would certainly find absolutely, positively zero correlation between governments run by the military and fascism.
I am certain also that one would find it a mere happenstance that those currently serving or with past service in the military have an overwhelmingly rightwing tilt in their voting behavior.

(37,428 posts)...that the Republican culture of militarization will trickle down Real Soon Now and that vets will suddenly receive all the accolades, pensions and medical care they think they deserve.
The Democratic Party putting less emphadis on the use of the big stick reads as weakness, and the GOP's propagandists reinforce this with dark mutterings about Democrats being ready to sell out troops and veterans as soon as they get the chance.
Dems are unlikely to dismantle much of this mythology until we gather the courage to halt the endless wars and acquire the mojo to defeat Republican blockades of veterans' benefits.

(13,340 posts).... is conservative by nature. It does not surprise me that prefer Trump and have no real idea why. They have been conditioned to hate Democrats and vote for Republicans, even when it doesn't make one damn bit of sense.
