42% of Trump Supporters Are Racist

For much of the weekend, Hillary Clinton’s statement that half of Donald Trump’s supporters are a “basket of deplorables” — including those who are racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, and Islamophobic — brought outrage from the Trump campaign. Many suggested it was similar to Mitt Romney’s famous dismissal of 47% of the electorate. But is there something to Clinton’s comment?

A Political Wire reader points to a recent Ipsos poll that asks several pointed questions about race:

Averaging out the responses to these five questions, we find that 42%, not 50%, of Trump’s supporters are racist against blacks.

Of course, Clinton was talking about more than just anti-black sentiments among Trump supporters. This poll doesn’t count the Trump supporters who are sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, or Islamophobic, but not anti-black.
