2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA Shockingly Honest Article from Politico On the True State of the Race
Politico seemed to be hitting Trump hard a month or two ago when he blacklisted them from his campaign but lately they are on the "tear down Hillary" bandwagon. That is why this article is so surprising. The gist of the article is that all of the side shows, the fake Clinton scandals, the seemingly chaotic nature of the election, all bullshit and none of it matters because, in the words of Jeb Bush's former campaign manger, all of this only effects whether "whether Trump loses in a landslide or a traditional polarized election.
Why Clintons bad weekend wont rewrite the race:
-Snip-
The pathways for him are still few. Hes not ahead in places he needs to win. Until that happens, shes still in the drivers seat, with or without yesterday, said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Poll. Everything becomes another thing in a long list: Trumps misstatement No. 24, was that the deal breaker? The answer is no. Is Hillarys secrecy, health and email foundation woes the deal breaker? Not apparently.
-snip-
And despite Clintons collapse on her way out of the 9/11 memorial ceremony Sunday in New York, which feeds every conspiracy theorist, every hungry Republican, every nervous Democrat, and every journalist and commentator looking for signs of life in this race, the campaign, for all its tabloid moments, has been more like a Ferris wheel than a roller coaster.
-snip-
The Washington Post/ABC News poll out Sunday showed 7 in 10 voters have definitely chosen their candidate already. Thats in line with the number of undecideds in 2008 around this point in the race. Notably, 60 percent of voters said Clinton is qualified to serve as president, while only 36 percent said the same about Trumpa big hurdle for the Republican to overcome in persuading them to vote for him.
-snip-
The poll numbers have been much more typical than the headlines, he said. Thats what the Washington Post/ABC News poll shows over time: Clinton at 48 percent and Trump at 39 percent in June; Clinton at 45 percent and Trump at 39 percent in July; Clinton at 48 percent and Trump at 40 percent in August; Clinton at 46 percent and Trump at 41 percent now. Overall, the Washington Post/ABC News poll showed Clinton up 8 points, slightly ahead of NBC News and Fox which showed her up by 6 and USA Today, which showed her up by 7. Those all came out Sunday, though, ahead of her incident. She's similarly stayed consistently ahead in battleground state polls, which tend to be more relevant for tracking the realities of presidential races than the mood swings.

(1,417 posts)So is this health thing really gonna be doomsday or not? The way i hear some people we should just hand the keys over to Trump now.. which is utter Bullshit.. this is a good article and makes sense to me.. i think the media/GOP overplaying their hand on this.. most people get sick in this world...

(3,072 posts)Quickly conducted polls today and yesterday on the issue seem to show the overwhelming majority of people don't think its a big deal. Long term I think it could backfire on Trump and the media. People are starting to see the massive double standard in the way the media treats clinton compared to trump. I think people are going to say "shes not even allowed to get an infection without it being a scandal?!", especially women voters who may see as an attack on hard working women in general.

I firmly believe she knew "deplorables" would be a bigger story if she did not say it in public. They knew every word would be picked over despite the event being private.
She played them and got them to splash it all over the press. Most people agree with her. The asses calling themselves deplorable now are going to alienate anyone who was trying to quietly ignore that bigotry.

(1,417 posts)I overheard someone i cant remeber but it was someone who is definitely anti-clinton.. said he doesnt really like or intend to vote for her but he said hope she gets better and hes tired of hearing about it.. i think it was sonmeone on Kos that was speaking to an anti-clinton relative.. you are probably correct.. thanks for the polling info... that makes me feel better.. also i heard she was on the phone with Anderson Cooper and that she really wanted to be there at the 9-11 memorial.. i think alot/most will admire her for that even some of the people who wont vote for her.. Trump camp thought they were gonna get mileage out of this.. we are gonna kick their asses and GOTV.. !

(7,531 posts)CNN was doing an in depth analysis of political fainting episodes. W's pretzel bruise, Elder Bush's emetic flu, other lesser known fainting episodes of backdrop people.
People collapse and faint when they stand still for a long period of time, during speeches, weddings. It can be overheating, locking the knees, too tight a collar.
I'm kind of exhausted that Yrump has managed to prevent Clinton from talking about the detailed policy she's good at. Instead of heated news arguments about the economy, this is the governmental equivalent of reality TV and trump knows big stunts get viewers. Networks are only too happy for ratings.
I saw that Trump is accusing her in a concise paragraph of exactly everything negative he brought to the table.

(3,635 posts)he was wobbly, unsteady, tired, etc. I'm sure he had days where he was sick, but they probably hid it, as they did for most presidents years ago.
These people are human, and most of them that run for president are on the older side - so of course they're going to have the typical issues.
What I also don't get about how the media covers this, is that having a perfect bill of health doesn't guarantee one can't drop dead tommorow, and having health issues (even considerable) doesn't neccessarily portend any serious problems. Dick Cheney had four heart operations and is still alive. HW Bush had thyroid issues and is also still alive. McCain had physical issues due to being tortured as a POW, and has lived a very long and vigorous life.
There is clearly a layer of sexism at work here in addition to the typical concern over candidate's health, with the implication (from the right wing conspiracies, trump and the media which is complicit in spinning such theories) that she is a weak/sick/frail old lady. It's clearly being focused on with a weird twist that it never has before.
