Related: About this forumThe Voter ID laws: How this battle can turn around
The Democratic Party is doing a piss-poor job fighting this campaign for Voter ID laws across the country. I'm sure everyone active on DU knows what they're actually for - to add more bureaucratic steps to the process of voting with the goal that it will discourage or prevent certain left-leaning demographics from casting a vote.
The Right has framed this issue very successfully in the media and the minds of the public. They've convinced millions that this is necessary for the integrity of our elections, and the only reason Democrats oppose it is because they hope to benefit from the votes of lying illegal aliens, immoral liberals voting several times, and the Ghost of Acorn. It's a one-two punch - Republicans can disenfranchise voters and at the same time make Democrats look crooked for objecting. And all the while, the GOP Brass chuckles and winks at each other during the commercial breaks at Fox News.
The Democratic Party has the right position here, but not many people believe them about the resulting disenfranchisement. And if they don't take this seriously, it's going to handicap their candidates.
The Democratic Party needs to put faces on these people. Make them real. Find a young person who doesn't own a car and doesn't need a driver's license. Put them in an ad talking about why it's not fair to make them jump through hoops at the DMV in order to cast a vote. Find the elderly person. Find the poor person.
And are they even telling people what's going on? How many people might show up on election day this year not knowing that they lost their right to vote because they didn't happen to know that their state legislature passed a law requiring them to get more "papers" before being allowed to vote?

(5,754 posts)should have hundreds of these people standing in line. If ordinary folks have to wait hours, it will make an impression. DMVs are understaffed now due to state budget cuts. Groups of voters will clog the system.

(3,577 posts)Despite the two injunctions against Walker's photo ID law, many groups are going ahead with canvasses and information sessions to find people who may need an ID if the appellate courts vacate the injunctions. (Early voting for the spring election has begun while the injunctions are still in force, and so far, so good.)
