2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSadly, half of the US population is below average in intelligence.
That's one of the reasons why the Republican Party exists in the first place. That's one of the reasons why this nation is pretty evenly divided, politically. People who cannot tell who is lying and people who are unable to use critical thinking skills vote in every election. It's one of the difficulties of maintaining a progressive democratic republic.
The leadership of the Republican Party is made up of cynical people who know that they can take advantage of others to gain power. This is why we must work hard to stay on a progressive path. There are many who would like us not to do that. We must stay vigilant and work to get out the vote of progressives. Unfortunately, the very people who can keep the idiocracy from holding power often do not turn out in elections. That leads to the typical flip-flopping between the parties in control of our Congress from time to time.
It is that simple. Donald Trump is one of the least skilled politicians to run for President, ever. His transparency should be enough reason for him to lose, but he is appealing strongly to the uninformed, unintelligent and uneducated. He is dangerous. We must stand together against his brand of selfish greed. But that's not actually enough. Even if we defeat this orange-haired, would-be tyrant, we can easily fail to hold majorities in our state and federal legislatures when mid-term elections roll around.
GOTV in 2016, and in every election!
That is the only way we can ensure that progress occurs. We have done that very poorly in the past. Perhaps we can learn from those failures and create a new dedication to massive turnouts of Democrats and progressives. We should know better than to let our guard down and allow the Republican Party to seize control of Congress and our state legislatures. It's amazing that we forget that every couple of years. Let's not do that any longer.

(783 posts)As far as firing teachers, he didn't say "education", he said "intelligence".
It's just one of those mathematical cynicisms. Some small number of people fall exactly at the middle of the bell curve. Almost all people fall on one side or the other. You can just as easily say half the people are above average in intelligence.

(10,893 posts)the power of stupid people in large groups. There are stupid people who vote for him, and there are stupid people who just want to sit on the sidelines and refuse to do their research on the candidates and vote. They're the reason why a person as under-qualified and offensive as Trump has a shot at all, and why the GOP can still win regionally.

(146,317 posts)of such people, time and time again. The Democratic Party, on the other hand, tends to make reasonable arguments that require some capability to analyze them. We're always battling against this phenomenon, which will always be in place. We can prevail, if we really want to. We should really want to, I think.

Cynical manipulators do their best to use this, including encouraging people (many already naturally vulnerable to authoritarian manipulation) to believe in certain ideas so strongly that the analysis part isn't even needed for whatever relates to them. And of course they work hard and constantly on what's in that "bag of knowledge."
Btw, liberal brains send incoming info for analysis before sending it to on for emotional response.
Greatly simplified descriptions and just the tip of the iceberg of how the brain works, of course, but they represent huge differences in how types of people think, who are most vulnerable to manipulation, and what manipulations work on whom.

(2,003 posts)There's a lot of angry people out there, many of whom don't have any real reason to be angry. They're just angry because the media and trolls on the interwebs tells them that they should be.
I call them "middle finger voters" and they're going to vote for Donald Trump. Not because they agree with Trump's positions, whatever these positions may be at the moment, but because they're angry and Trump is angry too. And Hillary Clinton looks to be the perfect example of someone to be angry at.
Are they represented in the polls? I don't know. I suspect many of them rarely vote. They'll vote in November though. With their big middle fingers. Just because they can.

(64,933 posts)I work in a professional firm where 80% of the employees are college graduates and at least 80% of the firm supports tRump and are Repubicans. These are very intelligent people who have been fed a steady diet of propaganda over the last 20 years from Fox Noise and AM Hate Radio.
The have become the generation of the angry old white men. They are also the same 25% "dead-enders" who still think Bush/Cheney administration was great.
You are correct that these people essentially see greed as good. What ever did happen to the country JFK and LBJ envisioned where everyone actually had a chance in life.

(50,276 posts)A little while ago I flipped over to CSPAN. They've got a segment on where viewers call in with their question for a candidate. Some fool wanted to know if this is a "godly" nation and if they are "godly" candidates, would they honor Sunday as the Sabbath. Pressure cookers are blowing up in New York, Syrian soldiers are accidently slaughtered and this character is stewing about the Sabbath.
