Solid South? Maybe not as much as you thought ...

Yes, Obama lost all of the old South except Florida and Virginia and essentially all of Redneckistan.

Even so, it is a bit surprising to see the results of some of those states where he got at least 43.5% of the vote.

Arizona, Indiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina

At first I thought it was a bit off since it had Florida as a bit bigger than Texas but they did cast more votes total. Trying to find states that mimic each other and it's hard, Connecticut is sort of like a smaller version of Massachusetts, Kentucky and Tennessee are also fairly similar

The Velvet Divorce was one of the most peaceful changes in political borders in the aftermath of Soviet Communism. Though the Czech Republic and Slovakia still had some kinks to work out after the Velvet Divorce, including the division of former federal property, they remained on peaceful terms with each other throughout. Both countries became members of the European Union in 2004.

If you look at a county-level election map one sees a line of blue countries in the deep South, those are counties with large African-American populations.
