Philly Police Group Speaks Out Against FOP Trump Endorsement
September 22, 2016 7:16 PM
by Cherri Gregg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Donald Trump has caused a divide among Philadelphia Police officers. The Guardian Civic League, a group started by black officers, is speaking out against the National FOP’s endorsement of Trump.

“Our question to the national is– did you consider your membership, really?” asked Rochelle Bilal, president of the 60-year-old Guardian Civic League.

She says the group’s members began calling immediately after the National Fraternal Order of Police announced Friday it was throwing its support behind Republican Donald Trump for president.

“We cannot accept it,” she says, “I’m calling all members nationally of the Fraternal Order of Police to denounce that endorsement.”

FOP President John McNesby declined to comment for this story, but he did speak about the National FOP endorsement this week on CBS Radio’s 1210 WPHT with host Dom Giordano:

“We are bound by the national FOP endorsement, and that’s the way we are going,” he told Giordano.

As for why, McNesby says Hillary Clinton campaign refused to fill out an FOP survey. He says the Trump campaign did the work and McNesby and other FOP reps met with the candidate.

“She basically– she disregarded and blew the police off,” he says, “you can’t go in and expect to get respect when you didn’t give it to us.”

Bilal says the local should have stayed out of it.

“You don’t have to fall in line,” she says, “at some point you have a very diverse membership here.”

Now Bilal says the Guardian Civic League, which includes more than 2000 members, is taking action to formally denounce the FOP’s endorsement.

“Because they got in it, we’re in it,” she says.

The group is calling for its members to send letters to the FOP. She also says the group may vote to issue its own endorsement.

“We are suggesting that they support the agenda of Hillary Clinton,” she says.

The group will hold a press conference Friday at 11 a.m. at their headquarters.

6. Couple thoughts. 1) The Clinton campaign should have completed the survey at least. BUT

2) campaigns probably get a ZILLION of those surveys. I really wish they would fill out the ones I care about. But they probably an't fill out every one they get. If they did the ones I cared about, they would still be ignoring a ton that other people care about.

On the other hand ...

3) with the high profile of policing issues in this election, I still think this should have been fairly high on the list.

But on the fourth hand ...

4) how do we know the creep isn't lying? And even if he's not lying, how do we know the Clinton campaign didn't reply to a survey for a police group, but just not the FOP?

Hope they follow through nationally although for black cops, that can mean a death sentence at the hands of their so-called "brothers".

This local Guardian Civic League had to take on the racist white cops here recently when they found a racist website frequented and moderated by white Philly police officers -

to listen to 1210 am in Philly in the morning.

Once coast to coast ends (weird guilty pleasure of mine, to listen to the crazies), I change that channel so fast one day the tuner's going to burn up. (ok it's digital of course so not really. but I might wear out the remote button. )

9. I heard it on KYW this morning not WPHT

Of course with all the station buy-outs over they years, they are a sister station to WPHT (formerly WCAU 1210).

I listen to Joe Madison on SiriusXM in the morning (he's ranting right now that "If you want Big Bird, go listen to Sesame Street!" after dropping a few f-bombs in an "I'm sick of it" rant against the idiocy. "Tired of being shot down like animals"... (am transcribing as he talks..lol)

I grew up in a household with a mother who listened to talk radio for decades (including Coast to Coast w/Art Bell and and later George Noory and before that, Larry King and Jim Bohannon) and I still do, although not as much locally because it is all RW now. Used to listen to, WCAU, WWDB (when Herb Homer was there along with Dom Giordano before he moved to WPHT), and black talk WHAT. But since we are relatively close to NYC, actually listened to WABC (actually heard Limbaugh's first broadcast there when they shunted Lynn Samuels out of the noon slot and used to listen to Curtis Sliwa and his wife and then when he was with Kuby...) and WOR (both before Bob Grant was there and after, when he was booted off of WABC)... Am still glad I have my SiriusXM though - more choices!

Not sure why I inferred that you heard it on WPHT. I listen to KYW occasionally but mainly for traffic and weather. Too many ads. But when I do listen to the news it does cover more local than WHYY usually does.

15. Since they are a news station

and CBS affiliate (but sharing the CBS moniker with WPHT), they actually get breaking news reports from all sorts of places including competitor networks like ABC News and Bloomberg (where WPHT is pretty much solely CBS feed) - probably a stipulation for allowing these 2 major affiliate stations in the same broadcast area.

I stopped listening to WHYY and NPR awhile ago (used to listen to local Marty Mose-Coane before and after her show went national). I remember listening to the Iran-Contra hearings on NPR back when I was commuting to work on the train. But eventually they were hijacked by the RW too. Back in the early '90s, I got a shortwave radio so I could listen to BBC and CBC and now with streaming and satellite radio, I still do when I get chance to tune in.

But believe it or now, DU is now my main news source of choice! You have literally thousands of folks combing news from all over and distilling it here!

5. It would be easy to get between the endorsing police union and Trump by continually asking
Fri Sep 23, 2016, 07:30 AM
Sep 2016

Trump about the shootings over the past few days. Trump is in full pander mode to black voters and cannot say the cops were right. The police union was unhappy about his remarks in the Cleveland church about the female cop. Trump should be asked if he thinks the manslaughter charge is enough and what the cops in NC should be charged with.

11. Tell them where to shove thier donations when they call begging...

I occasionally receive telephone calls from organizations such as the FOP. Next phone call I get they are gonna get schooled. No donation for an organization who endorses xenophobic, racist, woman-hating, pedophile(see Ivanka) and the list goes on.
