In the past southern Democrats were pro segregation. After the Voting rights act some racist Democrats started voting Republican even tho they did not bother to change their voter registration. If you ask them what their party ID they will say Republican but this poll, where the pollsters know your party registration on official records, may score you as a Democrat.

There are generational legacies in both parties, especially for "Democrats" in Appalachia and "Republicans" in New England, but also each scattered nationally, who never have and never will vote their official registration in national races. Do you think Kim Davis voted for Obama?

One should also do the math. The infinitesimal chance there is intelligent life anywhere near or even far make that 10% seem even more interesting for other reasons
