Guidance to me from the Commission on Presidential Debates

The debate is staged for the benefit of the public at large, not the few people invited to observe this historic event in the debate hall. In order not to detract from the event for the many millions of people watching the broadcast, live audience members shall refrain from threatening or disruptive behavior of any kind, including expressing approval or disapproval of events on stage as the debate unfolds. Individuals who violate this policy will be removed.

How will Trump respond when nobody in the crowd reacts to his insults?

I've thought this would be the biggest problem for Trump. No applause, cheers or chants once the actual show starts. He lives for that, but it won't be there, just all serious for 90 minutes. I once had to stand up in front of an English class in high school and present an oral critique of a book I read - except I'd only been able to struggle through the beginning and figured I'd wing it. After about 5 minutes of stumbling around, my English teacher mercifully said she'd heard enough. It was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life standing and sounding like an idiot in front of a silent class with no one to throw me a lifeline. I imagine that's sort of what it will be like for Trump tonight.

there is no instant feedback, either. He won't be as rattled by that as we might like him to be.

I'd bet he has stamina problems. Ahem. Wasn't he the one whining about the length of the primary debates?
