He had been president for almost 4 years. People knew him already. A bad debate performance wasn't as devastating because people didn't have to imagine him as president, which is one of the tests a challenger has to pass in a debate. Ditto for George W. Bush in 2004.

I think a poor first debate performance hurts a challenger, especially Trump, more because for many voters it is the first test of whether he seems presidential. Clearly he failed that test, and I think that will hurt him more than it hurt Obama in2012.

Millions of people saw all they needed to see tonight.
Hillary the smart and capable versus discombobulating Donald.
It will be a really easy choice for many folks.
