One week ago today...

...we were sweating bullets, had butterflies in our stomach, and were hoping that Obama's ground game in the "swing states" was as good as they claimed it was.

Today, the sweating has stopped, the butterflies are gone, and we know that not only was the ground game perfect, but that Nate Silver's analysis was impeccable.

I was out pounding the pavement, and canvassing. In other words pitching in to help. When you knock on over 500 doors in a swing state, you truly become part of the campaign.

...even though it hurt so much when we lost, I knew I had given my personal best (and my efforts were vindicated in a matter of months when Bush's presidency went into freefall in 2005!).

Couldn't travel to canvass this year, but I gave more $$$ to the Obama campaign than I'd ever donated to any political campaign in my entire life.

I did the same here in VA, and it's pins and needles but very gratifying in the end. I went to OH in '04 to canvas for Kerry, that was a nightmare -- looked like we were winning when we left Cleveland, but the numbers strangely turned while we were en route back to DC. Much prefer this happy result!

They'd started a year and a half ago, apparently, and left NOTHING to chance.

Kudos to Messina and Axelrod and all the others who made it happen!!!

Time to get the House back. And a super majority in the Senate.

But Tuesday during the day I was a basketcase. I had an important interview in the morning that I somehow managed to focus on, but the rest of the day all I could do was check political websites even though I know there is no real news before 5 PM.

I really let Fox news and the right wing pundits get to me. I'd look at Nate Silver's blog, then look at the polls and how well Obama was doing in them - which was most of them - but the right side seemed so confident, so it made me really nervous.
I decided to take Wed. off because no matter what I knew I'd be up late. So, I got some beer - Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale! - and started to watch the results come in and man, it was great! The night just got better and better. By the time they called it for Obama - my wife and I were dancing around and hollering like fools - a great time!

I had loose stomach, could not stop myself from using the restroom. I can laugh now, but it was not funny one week ago.
