trump is still in the race for only one reason. the media hates boring.
trump has proven himself to be thoroughly unfit to be president.
the usually completely solid, arms locked republican party has many leaders who publicly have declared they not vote for trump, if they haven't said they're outright voting for hillary. others have supported him but late in the game and unusually reluctantly.
he's alienated many americans, both individually and as groups; his business model involves screwing creditors, suppliers, and customers; taking advantage of bankruptcy laws and tax loopholes; using the civil courts as a business weapon; and he's woefully lacking on knowledge of both domestic and foreign issues and worse, objects to coming up to speed.
but the media have to cover him, right?
wrong! there's no good reason not to treat him like gary johnson. give him airtime occasionally for comic relief but change the main narrative to hillary being the clear front-runner and trump being at best the winner of the also-rans.
is that unfair?
don't make me laugh. there's nothing fair about giving third parties negligible airtime while giving the main two billions in free airtime (never mind that the vast majority of it goes to trump specifically).
the *only* reason the media refuse to treat trump like the loser that he is is because he still attracts eyeballs and they fear that the narrative of hillary being the clear and obvious choice and inevitable winner would be a "boring" narrative that would cost them viewers.
shame on the media for putting their profits ahead of the national interest.
