Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher told ThinkProgress that the length of the ballot played a huge role in the slow-moving lines on election day and during early voting. The six-page ballot, she noted, took voters 30 to 45 minutes for voters to read and comprehend. There were 11 amendments and no one knew what they were, she observed, noting that one voter took two hours in a poll booth. With such a long ballot, the lines moved slowly. Our last voter, the Saturday early voting ended, was at 2:30 in the morning, Bucher said, adding, Its atrocious someone had to wait 7 hours.
The amendments mostly defeated by the voters dealt with implementation of Obamacare, restrictions on abortion rights, and allowing public funding for religious institutions. All were placed there by the Republican-controlled Florida legislature and many could have been accomplished by legislative action.
Two Florida state representatives told ThinkProgress they believe the larger than usual number of ballot initiatives were part of an intentional strategy aimed precisely at creating long lines and discouraging citizens from voting.

(94,738 posts)or is the simplest answer -- that they try to steal elections the old fashioned way BECAUSE THEY CAN -- perhaps more accurate?

(4,742 posts)I live in FL and the lines were awful. If you didn't do your homework (between DU, Randi Rhodes, and my wife's school union I would not have known about the long amendments) you would have been in the booth reading for 45 minutes.
In addition, the language they use for these bullshit amendments is basically legal speak. You can't just read it and say "oh, here's how I need to vote." I had to read my sample ballot at home three or four times to understand the amendments.
The righties in Florida are awful humans. Rick Scott must go in 2014.

(1,828 posts)Just curious how these things went. I'm hoping anything the GOP wanted went down in flames, but did anything bad go through?

(470 posts)I didn't know that the ballot would be two pages front and back until I was holding it in my hand. That is possible the case for most here in Florida.

(1,016 posts)Not only did their tactics motivate minority voters it also suppressed senior citizens who were going to vote for Mitt. How many senior citizens can stand in line for more than a couple of hours. Their health and stamina are limited.
