but haven't some (most?) of the ballots already been printed. I think early voting has already started in some places.

IIRC, the party can't just insert some other name, or tell people that Pence is now running for president because that is not what the ballots say.

electors....... pledged to vote for the candidate......

It is how the electoral college works...Yes,,,,,,,,,,those electors are pledged to vote for the name on the ballot, but..............they really can vote for whom they want to vote for..(you didn't know that ..did you?)....
In reality, the electors are picked as very very reliable supporters of the candidate...but.........

they don't have to vote for the candidate............(oh, you didn't know that ..did you?)

and in very rare cases..they haven't.....you didn't know that ....did you???.......I know that is hard to believe...but the way the ...electoral college was set up was some sort of compromise...back in the day...(l787)..so..they didn't know about direct voting then, and also, a whole lot of people didn't vote in l787..so there you have itThat is one of my lessons for U.S. History..buried in a pile of old papers in a closet somewhere....

thank you..........

The legal challenges that would arise from a change at this late date would be interesting, to say the least.

The country ain't that smart. Why? oh we as a country have elected some very poor presidents..and, many people in my opinion vote for a candidate for ..reasons hard to define....anyway..that is how I see it.

but he could promise to resign and promote Pence on inauguration day..

I'd love to watch the fuss about the Trump library and lifetime pension if that happens!

Or he could instruct electors to elect Pence should he win.

Of course, people don't vote for a ticket in utter disarray, and his hardcore supporters want him, not Pence.

We're watching a historic meltdown of a Presidential campaign, more disastrous than even his most ardent opponents thought it could be.

so let's say that one of the candidates passes away suddenly..........then...the electors could vote for that candidates Vice President Candidate......legally.....yes indeed...now, that is what I read when I studied and taught U.S. History years ago.........but.....I could be wrong...people make mistakes...
