1. I'm wondering if the timing of this tape being released was well calculated

The time to fix this problem has likely passed its sell by date.

3. the can't change the ballots in many states, but

they can engineer it so that if somehow they win, the actual electors in the electoral college will split their votes so that no one gets a majority, throwing the election into the house, who can then pick the other republican candidate.

as a practical matter, though, it's extremely difficult to see them announcing a new candidate at this late date and with all the mess and confusion, somehow winning in november.

6. How exactly could they appoint someone when people are already voting?

So their votes don't count?

12. Nope. He was not nominated by the convention.

He was only selected by the candidate. The RNC would have to nominate him and get him on the ballots of 50 states. And people have already been voting.

5. Doubtful.

Trump was the legitimately-nominated candidate. The RNC have no power to "fire" him - he'd have to quit voluntarily. And if he did (which is doubtful; he doesn't think he did anything wrong), that wouldn't make Pence the automatic candidate because he'd have to be nominated by the RNC as the presidential candidate, and it's not clear they can do that without reconvening. Furthermore, people have already started voting and their votes for Trump don't automatically convert to Pence votes because Pence isn't on the ballot in any state as the presidential candidate. It's a mess.

I love it.

9. Way too late

Almost every state's ballot is locked in and even if they could change it, Trump likely has many early votes already cast. The RNC can't say "we are just going to count the Trump votes as Mike Pence votes" or whatever. It doesn't matter who they would run, it would be absolute chaos for the republicans.

13. Damn! They CAN replace him. Rule 9
Fri Oct 7, 2016, 10:11 PM
Oct 2016
The party’s Rule 9 states that the party has the power “to fill any and all vacancies which may occur by reason of death, declination, or otherwise.”

Q: How does the party find a new nominee?

A: According to Rule 9, the party has two options. It can either reconvene the entire convention – a costly, complicated venture. Or it can convene the full 168-member Republican National Committee, composed of a state party chairman, a national committeeman and a national committeewoman from each U.S. state and territory, to vote for a new nominee. Party officials say that the committee would likely default to the latter scenario.

Oops! Maybe it's too late to change the names on the ballot.

14. They can replace him if he quits, but they can't "fire" him

if he doesn't want to quit. True, they can reconvene and select someone else if he quits, but how would they get the new candidate on the ballots in 50 states at this point?

16. Rule 9 reads, "dies, quits, or otherwise." However, it may be too late.

They're probably trying to figure out a way to get rid of him, bit they may be stuck with him.
