The Christian right must renounce Trump or renounce its self-respectBy Stephen Stromberg October 7 at 5:38 PM
Starting with Jerry Falwell Jr., large elements of the Christian right have rallied behind Donald Trump. Falwell and the rest of them along with Mike Pence, who insists he is a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order, and any GOP member of Congress, current or past, who insisted that a man of former president Bill Clintons character did not belong in the White House have to ask themselves if they want to emerge from this election cycle with any self-respect.
Do Christian leaders and voters who claim to prioritize morality and character care about partisanship, identity or actual principles? Now more than ever, it seems that question will be on the ballot in November. In fact, it is in front of them now. It is long past time for anyone who has ever had a sanctimonious moment let alone those who have built careers on self-righteousness to renounce the disgusting personality an astonishing number of Americans have embraced.

(19,066 posts)Trump's words perfectly represent the Chritian Right. Their entire movement is about having power over women too.

(28,270 posts)Why the disconnect?
Trump grabbing pussy is OK but the wrath of God is called down on any democrat doing a third of what Trump has done every day of his pervert life!

(28,270 posts)But that's not the self righteous reason the religious right gave is it?
Their hypocrisy is sickening and so obvious.

(4,742 posts)When someone on the left makes poor moral choices it is a case for why the left is so immoral. When it happens on the right...they simply ask for forgiveness and bada bing! Forgiven! OR they just blow off the lack of moral choice for the bigger picture.

(28,270 posts)It actually started long ago. Even hardcore right winger Barry Goldwater complained about the religious right way back in the 60's.
Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.

(144 posts)If they don't denounce they lose moral authorithy. They are however deep into shit creek and probably don't know if they should go forwards or backwards.
