FU Republicans & Media For Making My Daughter's First Election About Trump's Bigotry & Misogyny
My daughter is voting for the first time this year. She voted in the CA primary. November will be her first chance to vote in a presidential election.
My heart is heavy with sadness. I wanted so much for her first election to be something positive and uplifting. I remember my first presidential vote in 1972, when I picked McGovern over Nixon. Back then, we talked about and voted on issues. Sure, personality entered into it a bit, but it was mainly about policy and philosophy and the future. One could be an idealist and vote their beliefs.
Compare that to 2016, where the presidential race has had ZERO to do about the issues and differences between the parties. It's all been about Trump's personality, which is then played off through the media's "but Hillary, too" false equivalency. The media has fueled this narrative, ignoring and pushing out any real discussion of issues.
Yes, she will be voting for Hillary, and I know she is still excited about it. But I have to say FUCK YOU to the Rs and the media for making the word "bigot" the crux of this election, for ignoring the higher principles and stakes that should be driving the discussion of this election and the assessment of the candidates. I can't imagine how I would have felt in 1972 if the discussion had been centered on bigotry. Would I have had a lifelong interest in politics? Would I continue to hold out hope for our better angels informing our country's future? Would I look at our political system with reverance and respect had the word "pussy" been injected into the discussion by a major party's candidate for POTUS? Probably not.
It makes me very sad.
