2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWHOA! All Mike Pence speaking engagements dropped from Trump for Prez site
I don't know what to make of this, but all the scheduled Mike Pence speaking events have been dropped from the schedule at the Trump for Prez site.
I check it from time to time. This morning all the Mike Pence events have been bleached.

(36,846 posts)major debacle
(508 posts)I think we all heard by now that he and his wife were absolutely livid at what Donnie said in the video. This could be part of a concerted GOP effort to drive Donnie from then ticket. I hope that doesn't happen. With Donnie at the top, Hillary could eat bon-bons and drink cherry liqueur from now until election day and she will be the next president.
LSK
(36,846 posts)Ballots are printed, people are voting. He is not getting replaced.

(1,546 posts)The public votes to choose electors not directly for the nominees. I think Trump will step aside perhaps after aggressive behind-the-scenes persuasion.
LiberalFighter

(34,857 posts)So, if Trump wins the state, the electors will be bound by law to vote for him - they cannot vote for Pence or another Republican. That isn't the case in every state, however, it is the case in all these states:
Alabama
Alaska
Colorado
Florida
Michigan
Mississippi
Montana
Nebraska
North Carolina
Ohio
Oklahoma
South Carolina
Virginia
Wisconsin
Wyoming
There's enough states there that if, say, the Republicans are somehow successful at getting electors to vote for someone other than Trump in those states he wins not listed above, that there will be enough electoral votes listed above, most likely to stop a secondary candidate from winning the 270 needed.

Pence knew what Trump was. Everyone did. Pence just sold his soul to the devil for political gain. That makes him as bad as Trump, if not worse.

(8,964 posts)Going down with the Trump-tanic or safe exit on the first life boat, his decision may not be too difficult. If he wants to be a viable candidate for 2020 and beyond, he would need to leave the ticket immediately.
workinclasszero
(28,270 posts)Could be.

(8,964 posts)So is Pence, unless he disassociates himself, although the narrow window for his riding off to into the future atop a white horse (white elephant?) is rapidly closing.

(14,576 posts)You've got the crazy bible-thumping 'christian' social conservatives. You've got the neo-nazis, ku kluxers and other racist slime. You have the misogynists. You have the homophobes. You have the xenophobes. You have the tin-foil hat Birchers. And, SURPRISE - now you have a sexual predator who racist, homophobic, xenophobic and misogynistic AS THE REPUBLICAN NOMINEE.
The truly hilarious thing about this is that the corporate interests who have used Fox 'news,' and hate-talk radio to manufacture consent among the ignorant for their immoral, odious capitalist agenda of exploitation - trying to squeeze us for the uttermost farthing of profit - are now RECOILING IN HORROR over the horrible orange zombie that is shambling along in hopes of being elected. They are looking at a 90%+ chance of Clinton being elected, a better than even chance Dems will take the Senate and the chance the GOP will lose a bunch of House seats as well.
You know, it's pretty fucking funny.
Unless he wins.
So, please, please, please vote, and don't waste that vote on a third party candidate. Yes, I know Clinton isn't perfect. But she cares about people. She knows the issues backwards and forwards. She is sane.
Vote Clinton!

(570 posts)He's not quitting because the RNC needs him in the event that Trump quits. What the RNC and the Trump campaign do know is that there is no way they can put Trump in that town hall debate forum on Sunday. Talk about coming to a battle of wits unarmed! Instead, they're prepping Pence to go head to head with Hillary. That's the only strategy they've got at this point.
BlueStreak
(8,377 posts)He was going to lose his re-election bid. Nobody else wanted to be on this suicide ticket, but for Pence that was a lot better than losing your own re-election.
And now that his stock went up in the VP debate, he is effectively getting off the Trump ticket. It is a finesse move. He avoided the humiliation of being ousted in Indiana, and now sees the opportunity to avoid being associated with the Trump drubbing.
Pretty savvy moves, I'd say. He comes out of this as the GOP front-runner for 2020.

(182,823 posts)Johnny2X2X
(19,066 posts)It's the best move for him and maybe for the GOP if they go full shunning of Trump.
Moonwalk
(2,322 posts)...the GOP has already moved onto 2020, viewing 2016 as a wash. Pence is probably thinking "Why be vice president to this yahoo, when I can be president all on my own in four years?" And it seems he's taking most of the GOP rank-and-file with him, as if he's their lifeboat. Yep. That's "stamina" for you. Or maybe it is (no sarcasm). The GOP certainly stayed on the Trump-Tanic longer than I thought they would.
PatSeg
(47,482 posts)And I've said for a long time that the republican party should just take this loss and look ahead to future elections. By supporting Trump, they have only harmed themselves and showed the world that they have no character or integrity.
Adrahil
(13,340 posts)Moonwalk
(2,322 posts)..and the republican party. GOP voters will eat that up in four years. And possibly so will independent voters. Americans have a short memory and less vote in re-election years. I don't think we should write him off. But then, a lot can happen in 4 years. Who knows if he'll still be the GOP shining knight in armor by 2020. No one imagined Trump, not in 2012 and not up till the 2015 primaries.

(10,857 posts)Several recent cases, including the case of Frank Lautenberg in 2002, have required states to change the ballot inside of their own deadlines.
However it's certainly true that some states are not competent enough to change their ballots, and early voting has been ongoing for a couple of weeks now, so it would be quite the mess.
relayerbob
(6,544 posts)Per the Constitution, we vote for individuals. They are on the ballots legally and that cannot be changed.
Won't matter, as any change will only reduce the credibility of the GOP and they will lose worse than they will already

If Pence quits it's a signal that the GOP is going nuclear on Trump, they will freeze him out and let him whither on his own. Not a penny, not a word, and not a single person to help Donald from the Republican Party from here on out.
They are saving the party and Trump will go nuclear too and tell his Deplorables to not vote down ticket.

(12,051 posts)in a room, they are told that Trump, if the Pubs win, will take office and then immediately resign (or be designated unfit to govern) and Pence would be the de facto President. This plan would then be announced to the public in the hopes that Trump supporters would still vote Pub because Pence would be the acting President.
I do agree with others on this thread that if Pence stays on this ticket as if nothing was wrong, he'll never hold office again.

(5,049 posts)Pence's career was on life support in Indiana so he jumped into the VP slot with Trump. Now he's on a doomed ticket. I doubt he's all that excited about taking the reins and riding this wagon straight into hell.
A politician only has one, maybe two chances to run for President. If he ends up on the top of this ticket - his national political career is likely over.
