Donald Trump’s threat to imprison Hillary Clinton is a threat to democracy

Donald Trump’s threat to imprison Hillary Clinton is a threat to democracy
Updated by Zack Beauchamp @zackbeauchamp zack@vox.com Oct 9, 2016, 10:14p

There is no way to sugarcoat this: At Sunday night’s presidential debate, Donald Trump threatened to throw Hillary Clinton in jail if he wins the presidency. This — threatening to jail one’s political opponents — is how democratic norms die.

This is everything we feared about Donald Trump. His long history of trying to silence critics with lawsuits, his inability to let personal slights go, his pettiness: The nightmare scenario is that these would incline him to use the power of the presidency to forcibly silence his critics and opponents. That’s what is done by tin-pot dictators spanning the globe from North Korea to Zimbabwe. That’s what happens in countries where peaceful transitions of power are the exception, not the rule.

Donald Trump just threatened to bring that to America.

Remember - at all his rally speeches, this is what he says constantly and then encourages his deplorables to start chanting "Lock her up!".

In fact, his entire debate performance was basically a disjointed and often incoherent stream of his memorized rally talking points. No matter what question he was asked, he always pivoted back to some section of his speeches, generally the parts completely unrelated to the topic.

he talks tough about killing ISIS without any thought to the civilians living there

He wants to punish peaceful protesters at his rally by inciting violence

He's threatened all sorts of people with deportation, extreme vetting, or whatever.

This is classic bully tactics. Lock her up is just another form of intimidation of anyone who gets in his way.

by his successor for lying and suborning lies from the intelligence community about "weapons of mass destruction in Iraq", which caused thousands of American and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi deaths.

But tRump is going to jail Hillary Clinton because of "her situation" (he's not even articulate enough to actually make the case). Fascism, pure and simple. An object lesson of how a Hitler could come to power in a civilized country like Germany. We are but a few percentage points from going down the same road.

We were "exceptional" as long as two great oceans protected us from the rest of the world. Once that protection was lost, it's clear that we're just the same as the rest of humankind.

I'm going back to bed now, cynical about my country for the first time in my nearly three-quarters of a century of life.

Like half of the repug party who dissed him, un-endorsed or called for him to step aside.

He could order a guillotine be placed on the WH lawn in his fantasy world. Maybe Jeb Bush would be first?
