2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumOMG I am so pissed here is what someone I have known since preschool wrote about me
"A friend (who happens to be Catholic) recently posted that she will be voting for Hillary Clinton. Now we all know that the Catholic Church supports religious freedom and is pro-life. We also know that these are things that Hillary Clinton is against.
Will someone PLEASE explain to me my friend's logic for voting for Hillary, because I'm confused!"
This was posted on facebook along with this nasty message inbox
"I think you might want to remove me from your friend list. Now that I see that you are going to support Miss Hillary. If she wins and starts tearing down this country like I know she will, I will blame people like you who couldn't open their eyes to the truth. As a Catholic, understand that she will be coming after your religious freedom."
I cried because this came out of nowhere this person has never discussed politics with me. I mean what the hell?

(36,437 posts)It's not an incidental doctrine: it is the very same doctrine as that which prohibits abortion.
Trump is pro-death penalty. So, then...

(440 posts)Don't give him, or anyone that power. If you feel right in your convictions, that is all that matters. My mother is 89, and very active in her church still. She & many of her friends are supporting Hillary. There is way more to this election than pro-life, and smart people know it. Grieve the loss of this friendship if you must, but don't let them dictate (like tRump) , what you stand for!

(13,189 posts)My FB presence is rather limited. Family, friends from school and the service, and associates/fans of the same teams and bands. Less than 220 people at the peak.
Now? Less than 150 and still dropping.
25 years of a "vast right wing conspiracy" to smear Hillary Clinton worked better than any other Republican program in the same time period... Shit it's the ONLY successful program they've managed in that period.
I can push back against and try to reason with the "I don't trust her" camp, but I just delete Trump supporters, there is no redeeming them if they buy that BS.
They were closet racist homosexual hating bigots the whole time.
It's depressing though - no mistake about that

(37,160 posts)No different from the people back in 1996 who insisted that if Bill was re-elected he'd invite the Chinese Red Army in as blue-helmeted UN Peacekeepers, and we'd be under foreign rule by 1998.
Somehow, after 18 years of supposedly being under the thumb of the ChiComs, the only blue helmets I see are utility worker hard-hats, and my command of Chinese remains limited to a general greeting and some menu items.

You just never know. I admit I've always made assumptions about her political leanings because she is a very devout Catholic.
Turns out she is very pro-Hillary and extremely anti-Trump.
Thing is, I'd rather not know. I keep my Facebook friend list confined mostly to family so I can keep track of their lives. I've seen a friend get attacked on Facebook because she doesn't separate out her personal views and her professional life.
As others have said, unfriend them and move on.

(7,719 posts)...so, you're voting for Trump, eh? A man who is currently charged with raping a 13 yr old, admits publicly to molesting women, has been married 3 times, cheats hard working contractors out of their pay, cheats on taxes, and brags about it all. You're a special kind of friend aren't you? I try to avoid friendships with scum, so I have unfriended you, and if you ever try to speak to me again in person, I will spit in your face. You're not a friend, you're a piece of shit!

(61,695 posts)Offer to stand back until after the election, after a few months have passed. Then send her your usual Christmas greetings. Maybe then you can restart your friendship in the joyous season with the understanding that neither of you will talk politics.
I think it's okay to tell her what the other replies have mentioned: that many Catholics, including priests, are supporting Clinton. No one is changing the Constitution to halt religious freedom. Then make your offer. Losing a friend over this stuff will be difficult if you both go down that road, but you can't stop it if she chooses it for herself.

(48,955 posts)Why the "you might want to remove me...", rather than his just quietly unfriended you? He is emulating what he sees from the hyper-aggressive Trump, and trump supporters (aka teapartiers) and reacting out of fear - fears that are hyped/stoked/spiked in a ceaseless (and dare I say some what hypnotic) cycle across rw media - and indeed then echoed from some pulpits.
It is not personal - that is don't take it as personal. Do recognize it as a symptom of a terrible phenomenon gripping many of our fellow citizens. You just got a up close and personal calling card.
I am very sorry you received this, and for the disruption it has caused.

(54,403 posts)My wife was raised as one, although she no longer wants anything to do with religion. Her mom is still a devout Catholic who goes to Mass regularly. Her mom has accepted me, a heathen foreigner, with open arms, and is thrilled that her daughter has, for the last 42 years, been with a man who loves her and will do anything for her. She also loves her heathen (by choice, one we encouraged them to explore and make on their own) granddaughters, who also adore her.
Then again, there are the people who instigated and carried out the Spanish Inquisition. Be friends with THAT kind of Catholic at your peril, and that's advice I'd give anyone, including Catholics.

If it gets nasty I would say listen you want to remove me as your friend...actually you better just block me right now before I unleash on your ass.

(5,578 posts)and following some ridiculous "she will be coming after your religious freedom" nonsense most certainly has your friend "confused".
Bill Clinton ran on "keeping abortion SAFE, LEGAL, and RARE" instead of the "religious freedom" tenet of "make it illegal and jail the mother". The former plan is PRO-LIFE, the latter is insane.
The only person that wants to take away any type of freedom is 'don grab you by the pussy chump', and you don't need to BELIEVE he will do so, he TOLD you he's allowed to! He will COVET your wife and try and fuck her at the furniture store.
