Donald Trump's shadow hangs over Kansas Statehouse candidates, but effect unknown

Monday 10-Oct-2016

GOP nominee could help or harm Republican hopefuls, depending on area of state

A presidential candidate like no other — Donald Trump — has created an unpredictable political mix in Kansas ahead of the November general election.

No one knows how exactly the bragging businessman will affect the numerous other races on the ballot. The GOP nominee has summoned blue-collar appeal through economic blunt talk, while turning away others in disgust over frequent insults, falsehoods, and shocking behavior — including sexually predatory comments he made in a 2005 tape released late last week.

In reliably conservative Kansas, a GOP presidential victory is usually a foregone conclusion. And according to polls, Trump is still heading toward victory in the Sunflower State as of September. Yet the unpredictable nature of Trump’s candidacy, and the possibility some voters will simply stay home, may influence state legislative races in ways unknown.
