BY ANDREW TAYLOR, ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obamas re-election has stiffened Democrats spine against cutting popular benefit programs such as Medicare and Social Security. Their new resolve could become as big a hurdle to a deal that would skirt crippling tax increases and spending cuts in January as Republicans resistance to raising tax rates on the wealthy.
Just last year, Obama and top Democrats were willing during budget negotiations with Republicans to take politically risky steps such as reducing the annual inflation adjustment to Social Security and raising the eligibility age for Medicare.
Now, with new leverage from Obamas big election victory and a playing field for negotiations that is more favorable in other ways, too, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other Democrats are taking a harder line.
Ive made it very clear. Ive told anyone that will listen, including everyone in the White House, including the president, that I am not going to be part of having Social Security as part of these talks relating to this deficit, Reid, D-Nev., told reporters.
Reids edict would appear to take a key proposal off the table as an ingredient for a deal on avoiding the fiscal cliff, the year-end combination of expiring President George W. Bush-era tax cuts and harsh across-the-board spending cuts.

(290 posts)I hope this is real because i've seen this before where Democrats pretend to be putting up resistance just before coming back and saying "what could we do..it was the republicans fault" by allowing them to take 80-100% of what they wanted. That way they look like they were the victims and for the people when in fact they intentionally just gave in after the press showed they were starting to fight back. Recall the Health care talks, Medicare Part D, etc.

(53,661 posts)Voting majorities are the key to having progressives prevail. That gets back to the ground game. Obama organized an even better ground game than in 2008 to inform voters on the differences in the parties.
The media and those who believe the slanted anti-Democratic spin doctors who define them in a negative way, have little to do with goes on inside precincts, districts, cities and states. But that is where the power is. For D.C. to change, Americans must change the opinions of their neighbors and vote.
Cynicism and voter apathy favor the wealthy so much that they pay to promote it on the left, while getting their base out to vote. It's worked well and they aren't going to abandon it.

(1,201 posts)Seriously, if the GOP won't budge on taxing millionaires, fuck them! Take it over the Fiscal Cliff (Good Name for a Punk Band) and let the Bush era tax cut expire.
Let THEM be the ones to explain to the American public why they raised taxes on the Middle Class. It's very simple Mr. Boehner and Mr. McConnell:
NO to Medicare and Social Security cuts
YES to military cuts and tax hikes on people who make over $250.000 a year.
Go on; I DARE you to block this!
