2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhen Rs say Hillary is lucky to be running against Trump
- and aver that any of the other 15 candidates who ran in the R primaries would be mopping the floor with her were they they nominee - they are basically admitting that the Rs always intended to run a smear campaign against Hillary, no matter who the R candidate was.
Think about it: Hillary would be doing worse against Carly Fiorina or Ben Carson? Worse against Mike Huckabee? Worse against the about-to-be-indicted Chris Christie? Does that tell you that the Rs were champing at the bit to have a broad discussion based on policies? Yeah, I didn't think so.
The Rs backed Trump and backed him enthusiastically, not because they wanted to run a policy wonk or a seasoned and experienced politician, but because they thought he would bring the crazy against Hillary like no other candidate would dare. And that meant bringing up all of the non-scandals of the past 30 years. That was the playbook no matter who ended up with the R nomination. It became clear that Trump would do so without any pause for decorum or decency, and that's what won him the nomintion.
Remember that the next time one of these RW assholes gets on the air and laments that their party couldn't field a candidate who could defeat "the most-flawed candidate in history."
And remember it's bullshit, just like everything else you hear coming out of their pie holes.

(30,481 posts)Not the first time a similar line has been repeated this campaign season against Clinton.

(116 posts)I don't see how anyone can deny that.
Hillary would have a much harder time against any of the other R's.

(2,542 posts)...they're just admitting that they were too stupid to nominate anyone else. Her "luck" was that the RNC couldn't manage it's own nominating process. Her "luck" was that the GOP base decided to attack their own leadership first this year, and vice versa.
Not that I buy their story any other way either. HRC would be winning against anyone who rode in that GOP Clown Car between last year and now. (Especially ¡Jeb!)

(6,409 posts)First, none of their candidates would be a guaranteed winner against Hillary. Rather than take the chance, they figured it would be OK to spend this campaign lowering the bar once again, in preparation for whatever sleazebag they have in waiting.
Second, this is a good test of how well the energized base of crazies transfers from the primary season to the general election. They already found out the religious crazies will follow right along, even if the candidate is about as far from Christian principles as Satan himself. And they're getting a good showing from the Tea Party, preppers, racists, xemophobes, conspiracy theorists, etc. This will serve them well in the future, when they want to make sure these various loony constituencies show up at the polls and vote for them.
