In fact, illegal immigration is considered largely responsible for the mushrooming of the file, with undocumented workers paying billions in taxes for retirement benefits they will likely never receive.

It works like this: Many immigrants who aren’t authorized to work in the United States buy fake Social Security cards and present them to their employers, who either don’t know they are fake or don’t look too closely. When the employer submits a W-2 form and a tax payment on those workers’ behalf to the Social Security Administration, the federal government holds onto those payroll taxes, even if the Social Security number isn’t linked to anyone on file. And then, a large chunk of that money ends up in the Social Security trust funds, from which retirement benefits are doled out to aging Americans.

Having worked for DHS for many years, part of my job was to run the social security numbers on those people that are applying for assistance, and to find that they had employment under that number. And these people were made to go to or respond to those places that said that they were employed there. If they were employed they could not receive food/income for their families.

If their boss takes FICA out of their check, what can they do about it? It is forced in that case.

Being paid under the table might be preferable to them, but they are forced to take what the bosses offer.

If they are using somebody S.S. number that they can not collect S.S. income?

Got a neighbor kid like this. Goes to job site, gets picked up by his friends and parties day in day out. To think he could collect the excess federal tax and then collect SS later in life is interesting.

Or, you mean that an undocumented worker puts money into SS using an unused SS number that actually belongs to himself. Can he later collect SS despite not being a citizen, or, if he becomes a citizen could he collect money put into the system when he was working illegally. That would be up to the SS system. That could be complicated.
