2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo I headed over to JPR to see how the Piners were handling the Assangeraper not having Wifi...
And I immediately got sidetracked by the funniest thread ever: http://jackpineradicals.com/boards/topic/oh-my-the-national-enquirer-tomorrow-will-be-hot/
REALLY? This is where they get their breaking news about Hillary? No wonder...
Oh my!!! So I guess I got what I deserve for even looking in over there. So I said,"Let me try again." And got to looking. I typed 'Assange' into the search doohickey and presto! Maybe presto is the wrong word, but I did see THAT nugget of pure nonsense fantasy...
I see people are just tossing shit out and serving it up, but not many takers this day, it happens. But really, I did want to know what they thought about assange losing the web. Looked again; found it!
Very interesting opinions:http://jackpineradicals.com/boards/topic/we-can-confirm-ecuador-cut-off-assanges-internet-access/
Here is a sampling of the range of opinions, paraphrased, of course:
Assange will be abducted!
They already tried, but failed!!
John Kerry made them cut off his internet on Queen Hillary's orders!!
Somebody needs to helicopter in and save him!
We'll never hear from him again!
We need help from The Russians!!
The Russians can save him!!
He is not a Russian puppet!!!
Maybe the Russians can fly in and transfer him to their embassy!
Or China!!
Plus Snowden!!
Kerry, Obama, and Hillary are a nazi haven of fools more dangerous than Trump! Must be stopped! This is attempted murder!
There you have it. This has been my review of JPR and the Assange has no Wfi story. See you all tomorrow for the debate!

(24,692 posts)As with most forms of hatred, Hillary-hate has made nominally progressive posters (at least some of them) go down the dark road of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'.
At first it seemed to be largely pro-Bernie and quite progressive which is fine. Then it seemed to morph into a pro-Green Party mindset. Again that's not bad, IMHO. But bitterness has driven them over the edge. It is now full of links to right wing sites and conspiracy theories and praise for Trump. Progressive media is treated with disdain while Drudge and Gateway Pundit are treated as 'truth tellers'. It feels like a far-right site like freeperville or Red State now.
Demsrule86

(58,785 posts)though. For most of those, H is just the main focus of a constant hostility toward Democrats, especially mainstream liberals.
They're the type of far-lefter who is very emotionally involved in hating the generally moderately left Democratic Party--so much so that these people can't be bothered with worrying about other groups. (They're in addition, of course, to JPR conservatives who delight in the same hates.)
Rough quote from a social scientist who's studied the far left and far right: "The difference between the far right and the far left is that the far right hates everyone else and the far left hates itself."

(81,267 posts)But if they've just gone over to Trump, or just wanna hate on Hillary or kick our Bravenak around, well, that's quite different.
I'm already in trouble with one friend from Catholic school who chastises me for the way I feel about - well, shall we call 'em Trump jumpers? That I should be more understanding, and less judgmental, and all that.
Well, that's just too damn bad. I find myself standing firmly with the Rude Pundit on this one... NO sympathy for those who relentlessly and willfully refuse to open their eyes and/or their minds, despite any and all evidence to the contrary.
http://rudepundit.blogspot.com/2016/10/yeah-sorry-but-fuck-donald-trumps.html
And I did find this, an article titled "Here's the One Frightening Psychological Characteristic that Online Trolls Tend to Share", which I found MOST instructive:
http://www.rawstory.com/2016/09/heres-the-one-the-one-frightening-psychological-characteristic-that-online-trolls-tend-to-share/
From the story:
The question for non-trolls is, behind the layer of protective anonymity, what lies at the core of the troll psyche. The findings of a few studies suggest that trolls who are mean-spirited and manipulative online have offline personalities to match, and that insecurity drives a fair amount of their trollery.
Case in point are two 2014 studies from Canadas University of Manitoba that looked at the personalities of some 1,200 people who engage in trolling, which the researchers described as behaving in a deceptive, destructive, or disruptive manner in a social setting on the internet for seemingly no purpose at all. (The trolls would likely say they do it for the lulz, or laughs that come at another persons expense.)
In the first study, participants were given tests measuring sadistic tendencies to get a feel for how much they enjoyed hurting other people. One a scale of 1 to 5, those surveyed were asked to rate the extent to which they agreed with statements like, hurting people is exciting and, I enjoy hurting people. They were also posed questions that gauged their levels of psychopathy, and asked about fairly mundane things, like the amount of time they spend on the internet and their favorite online activities (with trolling given as one option). The second study assessed trolling behavior, identification and enjoyment along a rating scale, along with a few other things.
Both studies revealed similar patterns of relations between trolling and the Dark Tetrad of personality: trolling correlated positively with sadism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism, the researchers wrote. In other words, those who took part in trolling generally enjoyed watching others suffer, were pathologically self-absorbed and lacked conscience and empathy.
Of all personality measures, sadism showed the most robust associations with trolling and, importantly, the relationship was specific to trolling behavior, study authors note. Enjoyment of other online activities, such as chatting and debating, was unrelated to sadism. Thus cyber-trolling appears to be an internet manifestation of everyday sadism
Both trolls and sadists feel sadistic glee at the distress of others. Sadists just want to have fun
and the internet is their playground!
Notice, too, the empathy thing here, in the last two paragraphs above. Remember who sneered and scoffed at the idea of empathy? This was back after John Kerry lost to bush/cheney in 2004 (under some questionable circumstances involving vote counting in Ohio, with Kenneth Blackwell - then Ohio's secretary of state and conveniently enough, chair of the state bush/cheney campaign - a male version of Florida's Katherine Harris from Selection 2000?). Answer: Dick Cheney.

(92,192 posts)Hillary.
The TOS were made very clear to anyone who wanted to remain a member. Those who chose not to remain members did so because they refused to abide by those TOS.
but it really comes down to this. This election is the election of a lifetime. The course of the Supreme Court will be decided for decades to come by the next President. If there were no other issues for the next president, that would be enough reason alone to vote for the Democratic nominee, and a good number of those who choose to leave did so because they refused to vote for the Democratic nominee
scarletwoman
(31,893 posts)And that I'm sick of name-calling.

Maybe they do need you as their friend - they need someone to make sure they don't implode on Nov 8.
scarletwoman
(31,893 posts)I've only gone over to JPR twice - once when it was first started - and I knew I wanted nothing to do with it - and then yesterday when I followed bravenak's link.
I have no interest in that place. I found it totally offensive from the get-go because they named it after a wonderful DUer who was deceased and had no say in their exploitation of his good name. He was a very enthusiastic Bernie supporter, but I'm quite sure that he would NEVER have agreed with the rabid Hilary hate that was making DU so awful.
You know, I've been on DU for over 15 years. Over those years I have made many good friends, and there are lots of them who are no longer here. Some were lost through death (too damn many!), some were lost because they've simply moved on and lost interest in DU, and some were lost because they have become "unhinged". Those are all different ways of losing friends. And every loss, no matter the cause, saddens me, that's just how I am.

Like the denizens of sites such as Free Republic and InfoWars, these people are hostile towards anyone who doesn't walk lock-step with their political views. Both crowds loathe Hillary Clinton and those of us who support her, they bear resentment towards the Democratic Party, they believe in some of the wildest political conspiracies, and they're acting as if they'd rather have Trump win than endure 4 years of a Hillary Clinton administration. It's one thing to be a liberal or a conservative, but it's another to be totally unreasonable and pout about not getting one's way.

There is nothing "left" or "progressive" about any of it. JPR has become a RW site. It certainly didn't intend to be that when it started - but it is nevertheless what it's become.
I check JPR every morning to find out what the RW is up to. I am never disappointed in that regard. Whatever the RW sites are spewing that day, JPR is spewing it as well.
That's not simplistic - it's just a fact. When a website is full of RW bullshit to the exclusion of all else, it's a RW site.

But you were one of the first to call these folks out for their rhetoric. And you really paid an on-line price! I suspect you really did not care!! And while I may think you went a little to far, or perhaps way to far, you have been proven correct.
Turns out there were many trolls here who were not only misogynist but at the end of the day not comfortable with a Black Man as president.
And I can't believe that there are still people here defending JPR exiles as good people and lamenting their exit. Any honest progressive, liberal or even moderate who spends even 10 minutes over there will see they are in the sewer. Misogynist and racist. Hell, most of the poster support Trump. I could give a god-damn for any active member over there. Hell, I respect republicans more because they are honest with their hatred.
The sad thing is that they will be back. They can't help themselves. But not in their old names. After the election you will see a whole lot of new members joining who seem to know the lingo and immediately begin attacking Hillary for various and sundry reasons.

Sure, I have a big mouth and should have kept a whole lot more of my observations to myself, but I was shocked at how folks I had really liked got on the bandwagon and lost the ability to self correct or be corrected or even be told they are offensive and maybe care a bit.
I knew they were going to support Trump. Hillary is a woman and they judge her a billion times more harshly because they are unsatisfied with self. I believe it was my predicting their next move as they were making the previous move that enraged them to no end. Felt like I was FORCING them, 'egging them on' and I must be internet destroyed to salvage their self perceptions as the leftiest leftist lefties and super intersectional best people ever.
But anyone with a memory and a bit of honesty knows that this started when us angry blacks had the nerve never nerve to be insufficiently grateful to them and demand a voice in this election. (27,814 posts)... is that they all believe that there is a vast, world-wide conspiracy in play - and everyone is "in on it" except them.
Bernie endorsed HRC - he's "in on it".
HRC stole the election - and every election worker in every state she won is "in on it".
Liz Warren, Al Franken, John Lewis, Howard Dean - anyone who supported/endorsed HRC is "in on it".
And they just keep adding to the list. Every time someone says anything remotely positive about HRC or the Dem Party, it's because they're "in on it".
They keep screaming that Bernie won the primaries, and it was "stolen" from him - and wonder why people like Warren are going along with it and keeping their mouths shut. It never occurs to them that no one is talking about the primary being stolen because it wasn't. They just keep insisting it was, and everyone who says different is "in on it".
They talk about Hillary's "obvious crimes" and "illegal activities". They can't understand why no one is speaking up about them. Again, it doesn't occur to them that no one is speaking up because there are no "crimes" or "illegal activities" to be spoken about. They'd rather believe that everyone is covering-up Hill's many crimes because they're all "in on it".
JPR is a case study of how the easily-led ARE easily led. The combination of conspiracy theories and paranoia is a potent mix for people desperate to believe that they "know" what's really going on - and anyone who doesn't buy their schtick is "in on" the conspiracy to silence them.
It's cult-like behaviour - and they are downing the kool-aid faster than you can say "Jonestown".

(34,648 posts)I try not to look, really, I try hard! But I keep going back to see what the RIGHTWING has to say without actually going to Freeperville. But there are times, many many times, that the same damn 'news' pops up at both places damn near simultaneously. Strange that.
NanceGreggs
(27,814 posts)... my go-to site for RW talking points for months. Much easier to navigate than FreeRepublic, and I can get the down-low on what RWers are saying.
I can't even remember the last time I saw a RW talking point that wasn't being promoted on JPR. It's ALL there - all day, every day.
I think JPR was infiltrated by RWers from day one - and as long as they presented as anti-HRC/anti-Dem, they were accepted as being disgruntled Bernie supporters. But the fact is the RWers have taken over the site, and the True Progressives (TM) are too dumb to realize it.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)Easy to blend in for them, so no big surprise. I find it odd that folks are angry at my reporting on their reactions to the news that Assange has no internet.
But you are right. Much easier to navigate than most rightwing sites, helps me fight the rightwing new straight away. And their rightwing new search feature is a god send. Just type in a ame or term and voila! All the day's rightwing headlines at your fungertips! Really time saving. Helps me keep my fingers on the pulse of Trumpville.
They even have photo thread where they add poop to the back of Democratic Women's skirts to make it look like they pooped themself! So mature and liberal. Anybody with any stabdards has left there already and those who have not are either trying to make it work, trying to keep friendships, or just plain strange. Honestly, they must like their name as the new up and coming rightwing CT site else they'd change.
I honestly feel bad for folks who kinda miss some of them. But those people are just not the same as they were. Supporting Trump changes folks. As does hating Hillary. I want to write a book called "Hating Hillary: An Internet Tale" about this season but I am lazy. I need somebody to make me submit chapters to them an then I'd get something done. Bet it would sell.

(27,814 posts)Thing is when the Bernie supporters were pretty much running DU because they were 85% of the site, they accepted anyone who was anti-HRC as "one of their own". They never looked beyond that.
Now they're doing the same thing at JPR - they accept anyone who is anti-HRC/anti-Dem as being one of them. The RW talking points then became acceptable, because they were coming from people who were "on their side".
It's been fascinating to watch how easily led people can be.

(27,814 posts)That is a BRILLIANT summation!!! There literally isn't a thread there that doesn't reek of stupid.
My personal faves are the comments about HRC's health. Apparently she's dying of Parkinson's
/Alzheimer's/epilepsy/et al, walks around in a full body brace because she can't stand upright, and uses a body double to do campaign events because she's too sick to attend.
They actually BELIEVE this stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
betsuni

(27,814 posts)Apparently no one who posts there has ever actually seen someone walk with just a leg brace, no less a full-body brace. They've also never known anyone with any of the diseases they insist Hillary is dying of.
They even insisted that the "Hillary Shimmy" at the debate was actually a seizure!
Well, stupid is as stupid posts.
obamanut2012
(26,077 posts)That is extreme Alex Jones wingnut stuff there. Wow.
NanceGreggs
(27,814 posts)That story is mild compared to some of the other CTs. One of them involved Hillary giving a campaign speech from her bedroom (being too sickly to go outside) against a blue screen, her image later being superimposed in a video in front of a crowd.
The "crowd" of course were all HRC staffers, sworn to secrecy about the fact that she wasn't really there.
And then there's the body-double story, whereby someone who looks, acts and sounds just like HRC has actually been the one giving speeches on the campaign trail.
Did you know that Obama is planning to declare war on Russia as a "distraction" from the news - which will be breaking any minute now - that he has master-minded and overseen massive cover-ups of Hill's crimes?
Alex Jones is an amateur compared to the lunatics on JPR.

(146,313 posts)will return to DU. A few are banned here, but most are not. I have visited JPR as a reader a few times, and recognize many of the screen names there, at least those who have not changed them.
Some number of them are people who "held Obama's feet to the fire," starting on the day after the election in 2008. Some never had a single good word to post about President Obama. Some of those will return to DU on November 9 and will begin to "hold Hillary's feet to the fire" in much the same way.
In my opinion, though, they have openly revealed themselves as people who are really not about helping a Democratic administration get the most possible done that is progressive. In this election campaign, I've seen more clearly what some of them are about.
They'll be back on DU soon, "holding Hillary's feet to the fire." I'm not going to be listening, though. I'll recognize them and simply not visit their threads. They will, once again, not be about helping our new President succeed. That's not their goal at all.

sigh.
A lot of good people went there, including myself, after it was looking like Bernie lost, and even before Hillary was announced officially the nominee, we were censored from promoting Bernie or his ideas. Or criticize the process. This despite the proven charges that DWS was working behind the scenes to smear Bernie. I just wish more on here would be sympathetic to the anger and disappointment that caused.
I miss posters like Sabrina who is a fighter and always had something great to say. I miss a lot of posters who made this a place to discuss diverse opinion within our supposedly big tent.
Yes there are extremist idiots on JPR that are perfectly happy to burn down the country thinking it will all be for the best. Including a lot of new trolls that wouldn't last a day on DU. But I think there are many that see DU now as a hostile place for anyone who has even the slightest disagreement with the direction of the party. And this kind of piling on in this thread does not help.
I hope after the election that the more brighter ones come back. Many already have I suspect, especially after Bernie publicly endorsed Hillary and implored his supporters to vote for Hillary. I am one. So just remember that many Bernie supporters are still here. I just hope this place can go back to bravely discussing all political viewpoints, even the ones that make the status quo uncomfortable.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)Hillary for a variety of reasons, basically because they know what time it is.
Sabrina is a Trump supporter now--still want her to come back here? My take is that all of those who took the same side as David Duke, Ralph Reed, and Jeff Sessions during the general election should never, ever, ever, ever come back here, and if they do, they should be shunned.
Not all enemies are traitors, but all traitors are enemies.
There will be at least 4 years to criticize Clinton. It's pretty simple, during general election season it's only who are playing for our team here. Not Evan McMullin voters. Not Gary Johnson voters. Not Jill Stein voters. And for goodness sake no Trumpholes.
obamanut2012
(26,077 posts)You are refighting the Primaries and not supporting the candidate -- JFC
NanceGreggs
(27,814 posts)Bernie supporters were never censored for promoting Bernie or his ideas. Those now at JPR fled DU because once Hillary was the nominee, they couldnt continue to bash her. For many of them, that was the only reason for being here in the first place. So they went to a site where they could post anti-HRC/anti-Dem bullshit all day long.
I think there are many that see DU now as a hostile place for anyone who has even the slightest disagreement with the direction of the party. And this kind of piling on in this thread does not help.
Their idea of voicing a slight disagreement with the party is to accuse Democrats who didnt support Bernie of being corrupt sell-outs a list which includes Obama, John Lewis, Liz Warren, Howard Dean, Al Franken, and many, many more. As we can see by browsing JPR, they continue to spew their hatred of Democrats and the party as a whole.
The reason people are piling on in this thread is because the hostile, vitriolic environment directly caused by those former DU posters who are now at JPR has almost completely disappeared since they left. Many of us I would even venture to say most of us do not want them back. It has been a joy to post here again knowing that we can actually support our (D) candidates, without being told that we have our heads up our asses because we refuse to see how totally corrupt our candidates and our party actually are.
During the primaries, 85% of DU posters were Bernie supporters, which meant they were 85% of the jury pool. A lot of long-time DUers left after having their posts repeatedly alerted on, juried, and hidden while, at the same time, some of the most vile things posted by Bernie supporters were left to stand. So spare me the many see DU as a hostile place speech when it came to making DU a hostile place, many now at JPR were expert at promoting hostility at every turn.
Yes, many Bernie supporters are still here theyre HRC supporters now. They are standing with our nominee and our party, in the same way we HRC supporters would have stood with Bernie had he been the nominee.
I am a Democrat. I have no interest in welcoming back people who are supporting a racist misogynist like Trump, who have accused Democrats of stealing the election from Bernie, who spew RW talking points on a daily basis, and who insist that the Clintons have murdered dozens of their political adversaries.
They can keep that shit on their own site, and wallow in it to their hearts content.

(14,173 posts)There was a lot of bad mouthing going on on both sides during the primaries.
Bernie people had to deflect all kinds of invented smeers like he didn't care about black Americans concerns, and if those didn't work DWS had a few more up her sleeve it turns out. In here he was spoken as living in a fantasy with his whacky single payer ideas, free tuition, and how dare he stretch out pushing his own plan for the country all the way to the DNConvention! We were all Bernie Bros. I guess we transcended gender.
And the Bernie supporters faux pas was not to invent new ugly smeers, but simply to remind people of events and decisions that she herself made in the past. We are not fighting the primary now, but those questions were important to ask, but it made some uncomfortable. Many times all we got back were personal insults.
And on top of all that, as you admit, 85%, although I'd say you are being a little generous, were Bernie supporters. And you infer that this 85% were unfairly censoring Hilary supporters posts with jurys? First off you do not know that, and second it could be explained in that out of proportion balance of supporters.
My point was that politics, like personalities, are never seen as, in reality black or white. I joined JPR as a knee jerk need for solace, but find it more and more ugly. I think it is being infiltrated by a lot of outside Trump supporters. Many of that large percent of Bernie supporters here tried it out. Some still post on both sites. Political views are meant to be shared.
But I do agree that this is not the time for giving the Republicans and Donny any ammunition. We are all together for Hillary. Trump must be stopped. Its unproductive to drag up the past at some point, it becomes more about looking forward and both supporting when deserved and holding feet to the fire also during the next few years.
But I still maintain that there are a lot of intelligent people that should come back hopefully, minus the right wing trolls, and be a part of the discussion. It would make for a richer environment of ideas.
NanceGreggs
(27,814 posts)... comes from Skinner - who is probably in a position to know such things.
The "there was bad-mouthing on both sides" argument doesn't wash. When 85% of jurors are adjudicating what the other 15% are posting, the end result is obvious.
I do not want to engage in discussion with people who are now advocating for Trump, nor those who insist the election was "stolen" from Bernie, nor those who consider Breitbart, FOX-News, and James O'Keefe(!) to be reliable news sources.
If discussing politics with such people is your idea of "a richer environment of ideas", that's your prerogative. I don't.
You seem to be ignoring the fact that what gets posted on JPR is open to anyone who wants to see it. We KNOW who these people are, we KNOW what they've said. That's why a LOT of us don't want them back here. The "True Progressive (TM)" masks came off a long time ago.
As I've said, let them spew their bullshit on their own site. There's no reason to let them drag it back here. They add nothing of substance to the discussion.
